What are some top tier/semi-top tier/top 50 colleges in the New York/New Jersey area?

To add to sureblah’s NY list, Fordham, SUNY Geneseo & Stony Brook are also highly regarded schools [probably on the same level as NYU & URoch].

In Jersey … Rutgers and TCNJ are pretty good, but definitely not top tier.

If you’re talking strictly top 50 USNWR National (as opposed to regional) rankings then:

In NYS:

(USNWR National Liberal Arts Rankings):
Vassar #14
USMA (West Point) #14
Hamilton #17
Colgate #21
Barnard (women only) #33
Union #40
Skidmore #49

(USNWR National University Rankings)
Columbia #4
Cornell #15
NYU #33
U Rochester #35
Yeshiva #45
RPI #50
Fordham (Currently at #53 just out of the top 50)

In NJ:

(USNWR National Liberal Arts Rankings):

None

(USNWR National University Rankings)

Princeton #1 (tied with Harvard)

Since you said NY/NJ area then just over the the NJ border into PA:

Lehigh #38 USNWR national universities

and

Lafayette #30 liberal arts

Caution…USNWR are not the only rankings out there and they definately are not the end all and be all. Among may other criteria (location, size, cost, fit, etc, etc) you should also figure your major into the equation. Some highly ranked USNWR schools might not be so highly ranked for your particular major.

Philadelphia schools should be included IMO.

You might want to throw in the Macauley Honors Program at CUNY (which is highly competitive), Cooper Union in NY (both Mcauley and Cooper offer full scholarships to all students) Yale or Penn (which aren’t that far out of your geographic range). There’s probably a few we’re forgetting.

Good points about Cooper Union, the Philly schools and CUNY Macaulay Honors (not rated by USNWR but highly selective…gets cross apps from Columbia and NYU). Limited housing and no food at Macaulay so you’ll have to factor that into the equation.

If you are looking at schools within a certain distance from NYC or in a particular state you can always use sites like these to narrow your geographical search:

[College Results Online](http://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/default.aspx)

Just for fun with ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■, I threw in a 100 mile radius from Columbia’s zip code for private non profit schools and it kicked back 158 results (Philly schools included)…College searching is so much easier than back in the dark ages when I was looking lol.

for a semi top-tier in Jersey. Rutgers University

I think Bard is like 51 in US News rankings.

Rutgers is a great school.
