i wanted to be in calculus but im enrolled in pre calc so i would have to take pre calc again and stat then calculus instead of just calc and stat

also im allowed to take the pre calc placement test does anyone have any site or anything to show what the problems will look like? im almost failing precalc but i really want to pass the placement test

What was the highest math you got into in high school? Were you enrolled into the pre calc class based on what you took on high school alone or did you take a placement test beforehand? And about this pre calc placement test, if you pass it then you will be put into Calc 1?

okay im in high school right now finishing pre calc

i took a test and am able to start with pre calc in college

college is letting me take the other test when i finish highschool

if i pass it i dont have to take pre calc over

im wondering is summer school in college the same as high school where you would benefit for taking math in summer or is it just finishing requirements earlier?

AdmantineX: So you took AP Calc and passed the exam but decided to take Calc 1 anyway to better prepare you for Calc 2? Seems like a pretty good idea, one that I'm thinking of doing so myself if I pass the exam next year.

I was wondering though if taking AP Calc (without passing the exam) and passing the class itself in high school would put you into Calc 1 right away in CC regardless of how you did in the placement test?

I got B in my first math class at city college. Advanced friggin Algebra. The professor was tough as heck. I was the only student in that class to get a B. Pathetic

I took Calculus 1&2 later and got As in both classes.

everyone else got as or lower than c? and when did you take advanced alg? the way i see college is for the 2 years you go you can take a math class each year unless you take summer class....oh and if you were to finish calc 3 in cc what would u take at uc?

My first math class was Intermediate Algebra. There were several people in my class who had taken Precalc and Calculus in high school but had to start with Intermediate Algebra because they did poorly on the placement test.

Hmm...is that the same policy for all CCs? As I've heard that you could simply show your counselor your high school transcript to contest your enrollment (if you're placed in a low level class). And I'm guessing those people who took Calc didn't pass the AP exam?

I swear the math placement test is wrong I was placed in math 860 with is Algebra and i passed trig in High School.

I guess it all depends on the placement exam except if you passed the AP Calc exam.

Question: In my high school trig and pre-calc are one semester each which both together equals one full year. In CC is trig and pre-calc one semester each which would equal to 2 full years in high school?

Also, what does the placement test look like and consist of in your guys' CCs? I just checked my CC's website and it's only a 12 question, no time limit computerized test.

I took the placement test too and started with calc. Never finished High School, but self-studied for the test.

My placement test was like 50 questions (computer-based), from all kinds of subjects. It started with very basic Algebra and you could see that when you were doing well the questions would get harder, up to precalc material. If you were doing not so well on certain questions, the next few questions would be easier.

I go to College of San Mateo. I could've went to City College though.

Trig and Precalc are one semester each at my school.

The placement tests had 50 questions each and we were allowed to choose which test to take. If you missed more than half the questions, you had to either retake the test or take a lower-level test. I barely passed the test and started with Intermediate Algebra, which was where I was supposed to be since Geometry was the highest math I finished in high school.
