Topic for my supplemental essay

Hello, all! I'm working on my Emory supplement. The prompt I'm responding to says as follows: What is something you have taught yourself in the last year? How did you teach yourself this new skill or concept and what was the result? (500 word limit)

I first wrote about how I've taught myself to nurture my talent for piano composition, and how viewing piano and music from the perspective of composers has helped me to play music (as opposed to notes on a page), and how that change in perspective has helped me overcome my obstacle (my inability to play music in spite of years of classical piano lessons).

However, now i'm thinking I should change my topic to one about going beyond my comfort zone, how I've taught myself in the past year to ask questions and reach out to others when I am in need of help. I was also planning to talk about how that has helped me grow as a person as well as a student, since I was also the quiet asian girl in class who never raised her hand. Additionally, how admitting my need of help has helped me address my problems as a student and as a person whose self esteem was low and who was scared of "asking a dumb question" or "guessing a wrong answer".

Which seems like a better topic to write about? It would also be helpful if you helped me weigh each topic's pros and cons. Thank you!

From what you’ve written here it sounds like you’ve put some thought into this which a good sign. As far as which topic you should choose I think you should go with the second one because to me it displayed a greater sense of development and it seemed directly applicable to the college setting, which is always good. That being said, the other topic was fine and if you’ve already written it then you should definately consider that.

When I wrote my supplements last year when I applied I went a little out of the box with my interpretations of some of the questions with the goal of setting myself apart and creating a unique essay. So what I’m going to recommend is ask yourself which topic would be more unique and personal to you and don’t feel afraid to be quirky in the essay because it shows individuality because ultimately that’s what these guys are looking for.

I was going to write about asking questions! I changed mine into something research related though. I like your second one ;)
