I have been accepted into both University of British Columbia and University of Toronto (Mississauga campus) for the upcoming autumn. At first, UBC was my first option as I really liked the international community as well as the prestige it holds. My idea was to major in Economics in the Faculty of Arts. However, I began to read opinions from other people and it seemed clear that a mayor in Economics within the Bachelor of Arts is not as valuable as a major in Economics within the Faculty of Commerce (which is what I was offered in Mississauga). Can anyone tell me:
- What is the difference between Bachelor of Arts Economics and Bachelor of Commerce Economics?
- Does any of the two hold more value over the other?
- If I want to do a Masters in Economics after graduating, which course do you think is better for me?
-
A B.A. in economics is more theoretical. A B.Com. is more vocational.
-
The B.A is better if your plan is to go into the theoretical side of economics, such as academia. A B.Com is better for business.
-
If you want to do a masters, the B.A is better.
U of T has a very large international community. Have you visited either campus? You do know that the Mississauga campus is not in Toronto, right?
UTM is seen as a commuter campus with a lot of students living in the burb. UBC is described as a commuter school too, but UBC has 3X the population so there are still large numbers of campus dwellers. UTM campus is nice but Mississauga is urban sprawl. No question for me that UBC is the preferable environment, and if you plan on an MA, I agree with @bouders, do the BA.
Mississauga is suburban sprawl. A really big suburb.
