I have already been admitted from out of state and was wondering what is the total cost with tuition, living expenses, room and board for University of Illinois? (It doesn't have to be a exact figure but a realistic number)
I'll be majoring in engineering.

I have not seen yet what UIUC will charge new freshman next year for tuition. UIUC uses a quaranteed tuition plan. The tuition you are charged your freshman year stays the same for four years (other costs including room & board can rise). However, what they charge freshman next year will likely be somewhat higher than what they are charging freshman this year. Based on 2004 freshman, you should assume total costs for tuition, fees, R&B, and books and supplies will be about $31,000 a year for an out-of-state resident in engineering (engineering has an additional lab and facility fee of about $2400 that A&S students do not pay). That figure excludes spending money and travel costs. For an in-state resident, you would subtract about $13,000.

If I live a frugal lifestyle meaning no high phone bill, not having a car and no credit card spending spree, how much spending money should I be looking at approximately after the tuition, room & board, books & supplies?

How much spending money is needed is really a personal thing. There are people that spend little but it is also easy to spend a lot if you eat or drink out or off-campus a lot. If you are talking about just buying necessities (and not including clothes), it is probably less than $300 a semester. Note that local phone service and basic cable is included in room and board costs -- you just need a phone and TV to hook up to it. Long distance, your own cell, or any premium channels will, of course, be extra.

Also an update: UIUC has just announced that it is raising tuition (about 9% for new freshman), room and board (4.8%), and fixed fees (by about $49) that will apply to incoming fall 2005 freshman.

This page has cost info for University of Illinois

You definitely pulled this thread out from the boonies of 2005...

OOS, they estimate about 42 grand, which is ridiculous, and will likely keep me from going to school here.

Me too, kinda sucks
