What states charge for state schools varies significantly among the states. Fortunately in Illinois they have not yet raised the cost to the point where students are demonstrating, destroying property, taking over buildings, and getting arrested like they did in Berkely, California last month after the board announced a 32% increase in fees.

Yes, but all these comparisons of relative cost need to take into account that at Illinois, the tuition is fixed over your 4 year college career, so the cost of college over 4 years, given the recent annual 6-8% markup would be a better comparison between universities tutitionwise. In two years, purdue’s tuition will likely surpass the tuition charged the class of 2014 at Illinois, and only continue on up from there.

Balthezar: You mean UIUC’s tuition may be fixed at 44xxx * 1.08 for class 2014?(all 4 years). And Purdue may start from 36000, and increase 6-8% in the following years?

UIUC is one of my top choices and my dad already said I cant go because it will be $45000 since I’m going into business Why is this school so expensive??? It almost cost as much as a private school OOS

As to the tuition question, the amount of tuition you pay as freshman is locked in for four years. That does not apply to fees, room & board and other costs. Also, the “estimate” you are seeing now is based on this year’s freshman and before you enter there is likely to be another tuition increase for new freshman starting next year.

As to why it is so expensive, There are a number of reasons but one is that state funding has remained static for several years because of Illinois’ continuing budget problems and another is that OOS tuition is set to some degree to make up for that funding problem – they are charging OOS more so they can avoid some of the increases for in-state.

Thanks, drusba, yet again. I missed the distinction about the tuition being flat after your freshman year and the room and board and other costs going up. Of course that makes sense. Your input on this board is really appreciated.

So you will go to other school? Others maybe 5K less than UIUC.
Is it worth to pay this extra 5-8K for UIUC?

I’ll probably go to UW Madison or UMN- Twin Cities because those would be instate tuition (and still good business schools). My dad wants me to go to IU- Bloomington because they are offering me a good deal of money so it isnt that expensive OOS.
