I think UT’s business school would be a long shot (definitely business). Not out of the picture though. SMU students have an average GPA of 3.5, so, like KansasGirl said, you probably won’t receive enough merit money to get the tuition below $16,000. That don’t even pay a semester at SMU. BUT, you would have a shot at COX (SMU business school). You wouldn’t get immediate acceptance, but you could take the 7 corse subset and then apply. Southwestern has been called Texas State for years now in San Marcos. FYI. A&M might be an option — less selective. I think your stats could get you in there.

I meant that Baylor’s pre-med program is tops in Texas. And I completely disagree about the Law School. After all, no one from UT has even matched the legacy of Leon Jaworski! That said, a law student would not complain about his prospects from either school.

First - you are not “average” but actually way above average, compared with other Texas college students.

Second - Texas has 215 colleges according to Petersons. 17 have selective admissions criteria (UT, Baylor, RICE, SMU) where your “way better then average, but not top 10%” may not open the door. That leaves 198 Texas Colleges that would fit you and welcome your application.

Check out Collegeboard.com student section. It has a wonderful search function that will help you target appropriate colleges. I’m sure that other cc’ers can offer other suggestions of multi-variable search engines.

Good luck, and give yourself a break; you are way above average.

Rivalries aside, KansasGirl has the right idea - look around, ask everyone you can who knows Texas or schools there (teachers, friends, etc). One other thing that could help is professional associations sometimes sponsor promising students (which is more than just grades, sometimes no one asks for the award and the first one who does, gets it). It can’t hurt to ask in your area or look online to see what might be available.

Good luck.

And seriously, contact Baylor and see what they offer. All boasting aside, it’s a unique school that is a major player in the top fields.
