Totally lost my confidence through UC admissions... waiting on my dream school

I was under the assumption that everyone gets charged the same rates, but that the states subsidies the students who come from lower income brackets. (In-state of course)

Why did the budget cuts HAVE to be on our graduating year :

Nope, the only thing that matters is whether you are a CA resident. See [UC Berkeley Financial Aid and Scholarships Office Cost of Attendance](http://students.berkeley.edu/finaid/home/cost.htm) which shows that all students pay $11.8k in fees and non-residents pay an extra $22.9k.

If you’re in a lower income bracket (regardless of CA residency) then you can get financial aid but I believe it only covers up to the in-state fees. R&C scholarship might cover OOS/international students though don’t quote me on that.

Rejected by UCLA, waitlisted by UCSD, accepted to WUSTL…

What’ll it be, Cal? The dark side or the light side?

i hate to say this but your chances are bleak. being a chinese male and applying to engineering, which is like what cal is amazing at and one of the best in the world, and not having the best gpa is not good at all… your sat is fine though, and so are the subject tests in my opinion. but having just been rejected to ucla and ucsd…eh. but i have heard that ucla and berk usually don’t both accept an applicant, so maybe it’s berk they decided you were made for.

I applied to cogsci…comann thats gotta be easy to get into lol

Check out the admission stats for the UCs relative to residency of applicants from 2008-2010. Pretty disturbing. UCB shows a a drop of 11% in admission for CA residents between 2008 and 2010, UCLA 6%, San Diego 5%, SB 3%. The other campuses have held pretty steady. It’s going to be interesting to see the figures for 2011 admits.

http://www.ucop.edu/news/factsheets/2010/fall_2010_admissions_table_7.pdf

Berkeley accepting more OOS and less in state not only raises the average academic ability of its students, but also brings in funding!!

Understood. The only point I’m making is it’s just that many less spots for qualifed in-state students.

And you are assuming that the admitted OOS students are more qualified than the rejected in-states which is not necessarily the case if motivation for additional funding is a factor.

We have to endure a couple years of extra OOS until we get over this budget crisis. Then Berkeley can start looking more like a state flagship.

They are (or were, last year) - OOS students need stronger applications.

If you delve into the stats you might first be confused: the acceptance rate for OOS students was higher than the in-state rate. Yet, the average stats of accepted CA residents was lower, just showing that the OOS/international applicants are much more self-selecting.

Berkeley has the largest increase in OOS admittance compared to the other UCs probably because it can. Which UCs would you choose if you had to pay $22k more?

Thanks so much to all of you! I think every response given was helpful in some way and I have gained alot more support from my friends about this. Its really nice to know that I am not the only one struggling with this and all of us are in this together. These rejections will only motivate me to do better in college and try to go to a better grad school than people who got in better schools than me, which will definitely matter more in the long run!

What does it mean that you received a supplement to Berkeley?

I thought all the supplements were only given to borderline students, but apparently only one of the three is for borderline and the other two are just to find out more about the applicant.

Also, i actually think im in a better shape than alot of people. I got ELC and got in all the UCs except UCB/LA/SD already, so i should just really be thankful for what i have!

That’s a great attitude asiantumpeter. You are wise to notice that…

novelmom - I answered that under Talent Supplement…

MantisToboggon - that’s what I thought. There was no way my son’s stats were borderline but I wasn’t sure. Thanks for clarifying that.
