Tough choice: Marshall v. Ross (Michigan) v. McIntire (UVa)

Admitted to Marshall, pre-admitted to Ross and admitted to College of Arts & Sciences at UVa. (You have to apply during 2d year for the 2 year McIntire program at UVa.) All three are great schools. Michigan and UVa have brand-new business school buildings. Weather's very different at each. Not sure where I'll want to work after graduation - although probably on one of the coasts, not the midwest. None of these schools are close to home for me. I don't pay too much attention to magazine rankings other than to note that Michigan and UVa seem one tier above Marshall - but what do I know? I loved USC on my visit (and really didn't like UCLA, so that almost makes me a de-facto Trojan anyway, doesn't it?), but I also really liked Charlottesville and Ann Arbor. Socially there are a lot of similarities as far as I can tell - big Greek scenes, work hard/play hard, great places to make friends. All have lots of school spirit. I want a school with a tradition in athletics & USC & Michigan certainly have that; all three have strong overall programs at present (with much room for improvement, too). Anybody have any insights they can share? Doesn't have to be business-school related. Thanks!

Really when it comes down to it, it is important you go to the school you feel most comfortable at and where you will be most happy as a student. It sounds like USC and UMich are more up your alley since they are both big on sports. Yes UMich tends to rank higher and has better recruiting so in addition of where you’d want to work after graduation, consider what exactly you’d want to do as far as work goes. Ross tends to be recruited more for IB and higher end finance jobs versus Marshall, especially in nyc and the east coast. USC’s stronghold for business jobs is California and has better prospects if you want to head out here after graduation. You can’t go wrong with either school!

I would do some reallly bad things to be in your position with those choices. Damn, good stuff.

3 fantastic B schools. Just so you know UVA sports is everybit part of the social scene as either SC or Michigan. Actually Their basketball and football arte compatrable to Michigan and they are the national champs in soccer and have an unbelieveabl sports program. The town is smaller than SC so the sports scene is much more a part of what you do scosilaly than SC for sure. We have several friends with kids there now and friends with kids at Michigan and SC… For financial market type careers (wall st. private equity etc) UVA is better than either for job placement. If you want something more to do with entrepeneurship

“For financial market type careers (wall st. private equity etc) UVA is better than either for job placement.”

Wrong! Michigan is at least as good, if not better than McIntire. Pre-admit to Ross is the no brainer choice of the three.

the girls are hotter at SC not gonna lie. that’s southern california for you  you can’t beat the weather down here either. if i didn’t hate USC with an undying passion and i actually applied there, i would be choosing between marshall (assuming i got in) and pre-admit to ross so i feel you

Chuck,
There is a business student who posts here in a thread and calls himself “Bored student”, which is a joke. He has written about his experiences at Marshall, the kinds of classes, opportunities and his impressions of the academic challenges. He does mention recruiting in his posts.

Please check those out.

On thing I would add is Marshall has very strong ties to Asia. Marshall puts on a Global Conference each year. It is sponsored by some very important companies in Asia. The last one in Taipei was completely sold out.

The 2008 Conference was held in Tokyo. USC Trustees, Toshiaki Ogasawara, Yang-Ho Cho, Ronnie Chan and Michele Engemann, president of the USC Alumni Association attended along with 500 alumni and friends of USC.

Within the school of business are various specialties. U.S. News has ranked Marshall as a top ten business school, but these specialties are highly ranked:

Accounting
5th among national universities

Real Estate
6th

International Business
5th

Entrepreneurship
3rd

Marketing
10th

Ross>Mcintire>Marshall. Companies are prestige freaks!

I have great respect for UVA but I’m not sure about Michigan. Don’t they accept about 55-60% applicants??

I would go UVA >USC>UM. Depends on financial aid.

It depends on what you want to do and where you want to be. If you want to work on the west coast, choose USC. If you want to work in the midwest, UMich. The south, UVA. Northeast, either UMich or UVA. If you’re doing finance, UMich is definitely considered a little better when being recruited. If you want to do accounting, can’t do much better than USC.

So yeah, in other words, it depends. If you know what you want to do and where, then it’ll be an easy decision. If you can’t, then go with your gut feeling. All 3 schools are great and you can’t go wrong at any of them.

“I have great respect for UVA but I’m not sure about Michigan. Don’t they accept about 55-60% applicants??”

Ah…NO!

Actually I do think UMich does accept close to 50%, but for an out of state student, it’s still pretty difficult to get in. However, that’s for UMich as a whole. Ross is extremely competitive, especially pre-admit.

Agree with rjkofnovi

What exactly do you agree with?? Michigan accepts about 50% of applicants and some other years less recently even more.

OP, what do you mean by being pre-admitted to Ross? Did you get in as a Ross student or LSA student? It does make a huge difference.

The choice should come down to which part of the country you want to work in.

If you are in love with California, you should definitely go to USC Marshall, for there will be invariably many opportunities for you to work here in Cali with USC degree.

But if you are interested in landing a job someplace in the East Coast, then I would choose UVA over Michigan.

But if you are already admitted to Ross program, then…whew, I would go to Ross for sure.

UVA is really a dark horse in NYC finance/banking industry. Many currently working in IBD NYC are very surprised by the number of UVA graduates withing their firms.

“But if you are interested in landing a job someplace in the East Coast, then I would choose UVA over Michigan”

This is just not accurate. Ross is just as heavily recruited in NYC, if not more so for IB, than UVA.

My comment was based on the assumption that he got into UMich as LSA major, not Ross.

My personal opinion on Ross was expressed by the next sentence.

Thanks for the input everybody. It was an incredibly difficult decision, but at literally the last hour, I realized that USC was the best place for me. I know I was very fortunate to have really good choices; in lots of ways, it would’ve been easier to’ve been rejected by at least one of my schools. The past few days have only reinforced my feeling that I made the right choice; and now, I’m a Trojan and can’t wait to get to school!

Congrats on your decision! I’m sure you’ll have a great time at USC and it’ll continue to reinforce your decision  Fight on!
