TOWERS OR FORBES honors HOUSING

If i go to Pitt, which housing is would be better for me...Towers or Forbes and why?!
Here's how i view myself: pretty intelligent and somewhat nerdy but interested in more than academics...ima huge sports fan and like playing videogames...and i want to party in college so yea.

any good/bad experiences with either housing please share

Not going to lie… Forbes is known for being the nerd dorm. Avoid it if you can; Towers is the place to be.

Towers! It houses most of the freshmen, its convenient to everything (including Market Central which is just downstairs) - Forbes is about 4 blocks away from everything!

Towers always has an eclectic mix of people and had a very social atmosphere. I have a preference to Tower A - I lived on the engineering community floors. So with Tower A, you get a mix of the engineers and the “academic-type” kids, along with everyone else. It’s more social than Tower C, but not as rowdy as Tower B.

Of course, different people have different experiences, but this is what I observed from what others have told me and when I visited others dorms.

On a cold/snowy day like today you would be very happy not to have to leave the dorm for dinner. The towers are very close to everything including Market Central. Forbes is more of a hike.

For convenience – Towers – hands down.

If you are taking the honors science classes, it might be easier to find people to study with or ask questions of in Forbes. DD wishes she had gone for the honors dorm instead of the global community in Sutherland.

My daughter loved Towers so much she did two years there (she’s all about convenience), but she said that the kids who lived in Forbes liked it a lot.

thanks everyone for the comments so far. md mom that scares me i was leaning towards towers but i would be in the pharmd program if i go here, and there is a good chance i will. and another question, if i chose towers my freshman year, could i choose forbes sophomore year or no?

Sorry, tfeduardo12, Forbes Hall, at least for these past four years, has only been for freshmen. If you stay with the Honors housing, your choice in sophomore year and up are the Forbes/Craig apartments, further down on Forbes Avenue, across from the Carnegie Museum of Art.

I’m somewhat confused about honors housing. My son was accepted to Pitt and told he qualifies for the honors college. The brochure that came says that first-year students live in Litchfield Tower B where there are four floors devoted to first-year honors college students. Then it says that upper-class students have a variety of options including Forbes. Can anyone comment on this and explain a little more about the honors options? If you are in the honors college do you automatically live in honors housing? Are there advantages? It sounds like the towers is automatic for first-year and then there are options later on - is that right?

Just as a note, if you’re doing pharmacy, freshmen year you’ll probably doing all your pre-reqs like chemistry, biology, math, etc. There are PLENTY of freshmen who take these classes, so being in Towers wouldn’t be much different.

However, I guess if you take Honors classes, that’s a little different (even though, I personally recommend not to take Honors classes, but thats another topic) because I guess more people in Forbes will be taking Honors classes.

intmof2–Honors housing this year is in Forbes and required that interested students write an essay–something about why honors housing is a good thing. Either it has been changed for next year or it wasn’t changed in the brochure you were sent. You might ask the question of housing. Not all honors-qualifed students live in honors housing for any number of reasons. And Emi2008 has a point about honors classes–they are not for everyone.

Last year, the honors housing was at Forbes and it required an essay when you applied for it. Don’t know if they have switched it to Towers this year but the housing brochure/selection guide for Sept. 2010 has not been updated yet (it will be before the Feb. 12 deadline for the housing deposit for returning students).

I believe it use to be housed at Towers then they switched it to Forbes. I don’t believe you would have a problem finding someone to study with if you took the science/math courses. Towers had the SPACE program which was for freshmen engineers – lots of science and math being taken there plus some who took the honors chem and physics too.

Are we given the Forbes housing essay after submitting our enrollment deposit and when are we notified, after we submit the essay, that we can/cannot room in honors housing?

Yes, you have to send in your enrollment deposit in order to get the housing application/information packet sent to you. Then you have to send in your housing deposit by the deadline (it is usually in the housing info packet). The application/essay for honors housing comes after that (I think they put it up on the honors college site). The application for SPACE is put up on the Freshmen Engineering page.

I don’t remember when Honors Housing was notified but for SPACE – we were never notified whether he got onto the SPACE floors. It was only after the housing assignment/roommates info was posted on his Pitt account that we realized he was assigned to a SPACE floor.

You can’t do anything regarding housing until after the enrollment deposit is paid, it starts the ball rolling with housing and everything else.

Do you know if housing is prioritized based on the date of the enrollment deposit?

Housing says no but if you are sure you will be attending Pitt – I would send in the deposit.

Ok, well I am in Forbes (as my home as well as literally as I write this) so I suppose I will give my thoughts.

My impression is that Forbes isn’t all that different from everywhere else so whatever extreme thing you hear either for or against it aren’t true. However, here are the more subtle differences.

Almost everybody does study some of the time (though plenty of people only study here and there) and most people have some academic interests (though not all).

It is quieter, I think, though people still get drunk, run around yelling in the halls for one reason or another (i do that a bunch), or otherwise make noise.

There are more nerdy kids though they (maybe i should say we) are by no means a true majority. The majority of people are mostly normal with a bit of a nerdy side. It is a lot of fun sometimes because of that. A large portion of the dorm parties. However, parties generally are elsewhere if you aren’t into that

People do tend to all be fairly smart

It tends to be a bit (though less than it might be) more inclusive

It is smaller so you know much of the building

The rooms are nicer

You have to walk to market (a lot of people like this because none of us have really gained a lot of weight) which can be a pain.

You tend to feel more connected to Oakland but less to the freshman towers scene.

Anyways, its just a dorm. All the same stuff happens. Some just happens a bit more often and some a bit less. Its same with the people. All kind of people are represented the distribution is a bit different.

Is it for you?

I don’t know. For most people I would say no. However, I am really happy with my decision. Its entirely a personal thing.

I hope that helped.

thanks everyone for responding

If you live in Forbes, the distance from Market Central isn’t that bad because the food in Market Central sucks. It’s like school cafeteria food and after about three weeks you’ll be sick of it. The only plus side to Market Central is that it’s similar to a buffet so you can eat/take as much food as you want.
