town

Does anyone here know where Vassar students hang out? When I went and visited the campus seemed really closed-in, like basically people were either in their dorms or at the Student Center. Maybe it's because I went in the middle of winter ... but it just seemed like not many even go into main Poughkeepsie town. I guess I'm used to most colleges having some center town in campus. Any ideas?

Basically, you don't go into Poughkeepsie to my knowledge. Kids go out and theres a few things directly across from campus, but Vassar isn't exactly known for good relations with the city. It doesn't help that there isn't exactly anything to do in Poughkeepsie anyway.

Well I guess it's good that they're not missing out on anything, then,... but what is the main entertainment? I mean there has to be somewhere besides the library and the student center... right?

There are places along Raymond Ave. just off campus, that does offer some entertainment for the students. The Student Center has a number of places to hang, as well as the Aula, a sort of coffeeshop. There are movies shown in Skinner, concerts, and of course, lots of parties. In the spring there are outdoor activities, founders day, etc. You won't be bored. And if you need to get away, hop the train to NYC. or look for rides on the ride board to many locations (other colleges, Boston, etc).

With no exageration whatsoever, Poughkeepsie is one of the worst places I have been to in my life. I like Vassar a lot, which is why I applied, but the town itself sucks. My family and I drove through the town at night, and it was really shady... on par with the shady sections of various major cities (and yes, I have been to them).

How long is the train ride to the city usually?

Usually about 2 hours

90-100 minutes

it is no more than two hours. Sometimes it takes one hour and thirty minutes, but if there is train traffic it takes about one hour and forty five minutes. Sometimes the trains run express, too.

Thanks. I'm anticipating being near the city, if not in it.

It is an easy, and pretty trainride.
