I am really interested in biology and engineering, and I think that biomedical engineering is the perfect fit for me. However, after reading several articles, it became clear that it is recommended to go into more of a traditional engineering discipline, such as mechanical or chemical, with a minor in biomedical engineering or biology. This is because, according to the websites I looked at, biomedical engineering degrees are too broad and when it comes to being hired for biomedical companies, people with more traditional engineering degrees who are more specialized get hired over biomedical engineers. I would like to add, however, that many of these articles were several years old. I was wondering if this still holds true today, and if I should consider majoring in a more traditional engineering discipline. Would this hold true if I were going to attend a top biomedical engineering school, such as Georgia Tech?
That is the advice my D received along with BME being one of the only undergraduate engineering majors that isn’t employable without a graduate degree.
That seems to fit with the info I’ve read in BME threads here. What are your particular areas of interest?
