Transcript Problems

Has anyone had problems with the admissions office receiving transcripts? My S asked his GC (who I don't really trust) to send them three times now. She says she has sent them but the UNCA admissions dept hasn't received them. He applied in early October and they are telling him they still do not have all the information they need. We are hoping for a 12/15 response, because this is THE one and only school he has really liked. (He applied to two others, a reach and a safety but this is his match.)

Anyone else applying?

my d applied and they received her transcript, etc. I would contact your son's gc and ask how she sent them, mail or electronically and then request she send them again. You mention you don't really trust the gc, and it sounds unusual for a college to never receive transcripts that were "sent 3 x". I think the gc may just need to hear from you to get how important this is. good luck... what did your son find about unca that that he liked. my d liked the size and beautiful location, but we have not visited, have you?

I'm pretty sure the problem is at our end. The GC and I have "chatted" a number of times. Most students here apply instate and she seems to get thrown when kids step out of the mold.

Yes, we've visited twice. After the first visit, during the summer, he like the town, the size of the school and what I would call the "vibe." The school seemed to fit. The students "looked like him" although the students, to me, looked like college students everywhere. What sealed it, though, was going to the Open House and meeting professors. Something just clicked. His high school, while rated #1 in our state, just does not have many really good teachers. He just like how the professors interacted with him. He also liked the liberal arts interdisciplinary approach. He's interested in both environmental science and psychology. When they used enivironmental psychology as an example of interdisciplinary study, he flipped. Also, Peru. ES students can go to Peru. He's been talking about Peru for years.

He's an OOS so I'm a bit concerned about the NC cap. He has no fall back as his "2nd" choice has about 30,000 students.

What about your D? Where else is she applying?

sounds like a really good match for your son...good luck
my daughter also applied to Florida State--accepted, and FAU Honors College--accepted with a scholarship, New College of Florida, Rollins College. UNCA is the only OOS she applied to as she feels unsure about leaving Fla. She is also interested in psychology and likes what she's heard about the openness at UNCA. I think they find out on the 15th? I have a freshman son in college as well, so sometimes I am overloaded with info. (he's at Washington and Lee Univ in Va--great school--he has had a good adjustment to college life)

Our D applied there at the last minute.....we live about an hour out of Asheville so we were both surprised she applied.....she said she needed a safety and the more she thought about it, the more she liked the idea of the location and the outdoor programs (she is really involved in outdoor sports) and the small size. She is applying to 6 LACs that are all out of state, along with UNC CH, so we'll wait and see. She went to a Nike Sports Camp there two summers ago and loved the campus. We have not visited. We will do so in the spring. Any other insights? I imagine most of the kids are from the Western NC area?

According to the campus tour guide, about 18% are from OOS, a number capped by NC. The remaining students come from all over the state. From what we were told during the Open House, the school works very hard to keep the students on campus over the weekends, so it doesn't have a "commuter college" feel. No cars for freshman probably also helps. Asheville is a very "cool" town. Very arty, lots of restaurants, good music scene, and about 2 miles from campus. A free shuttle runs from the college into town.

Asheville has a small airport, I believe, but Greenville, SC is only about 1 1/2 hrs away and has Allegiant Air, so you can fly to about 5 or 6 places in Florida for less than $100. We flew into Tampa this summer for less than $150 a person, roundtrip.

My S has good friends in Florida who want him to apply to FSU and my sister in on the faculty at UF. I guess if the news is not good on 12/15, we will be looking at Florida!

We live close to Asheville, just moved here two years ago, but I can attest it is an awesome town! Lots to do and GREAT if you love hiking, kayaking, outdoors, etc. Now I am anxious to visit the campus. I can't believe it is at our own back door and we haven't gone yet!

I've heard the town is great...my brother is building a house there hoping to retire, (graduated UNC Chapel Hill law school many moons ago and has always loved Carolina.

good luck to all of our kids...my daughter's top choice is FSU, (mostly bc her boyfriend from Pa was also accepted there--has he visited?).

FSU is too big for him. In a weeks time, we should know whether or not we need to start from scratch.
