Transexuals in Texas? Really?

I've heard (but not seen any statistics) that there were a few transexuals at UT Austin as well as a large amount of gays and lesbians. This seems mind-boggling, as Texas is probably one of the most conservative states in the nation. Are they really tolerated?

austin is liberal

Texas has over 24 million people. Do you really think every single one of them is conservative?

I can’t believe that anyone would be “mind-boggled” that one of the largest states in the US happens to have some diversity.

Genetics do not know state boundaries. The gay gene exists in Texas just like everywhere else. If you are smart enough to get in to UT, you should not have asked this question.

Harris County (one of the largest counties in Houston) voted mostly democratic in the 08 elections.
Not everyone is conservative. (especially not me :D)

Yes, we are “tolerated” here in TX.

haha, this question really makes me laugh…there’s some statistic out there that like around 70% of college students consider themselves liberal. Come on now, you can’t seriously have been “mind-boggled” by this.

Danes in Texas? Really?

I’ve heard (but not seen any statistics) that there are Danish people at UT Austin as well as a large number of Norwegians and Swedes, especially in the Swedish language program. This seems mind-boggling, as Texas is probably one of the most conservative states in the nation. Are people from Denmark really tolerated?

:D
(feeble mom attempt at humor)

No, we sent all the Danes off to camps years ago.

Haha at the Dane jokes… I hope I don’t get eaten alive since I am a conservative :(. I’ll try to keep my mouth shut but I am definately going home come election time haha…

UT is pretty much 50/50 liberal and conservative…the liberals are just louder!

Honestly, I considered myself to be a liberal before I got to UT, but the liberals here scare the crap out of me…I’ve changed to just saying I’m a Democrat.

We have cross-dressers, too. :)

[Leslie Cochran - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](<a href=“Leslie Cochran - Wikipedia”>Leslie Cochran - Wikipedia)

I didn’t know about Leslie Cochran, but I knew about the red thong bicycle guy. My daughter’s friend just crossed Guadalupe in the crosswalk with him and his bike last week. She said he did not look very comfortable. Hmmm. I would think that red thong would be uncomfortable even if you were not sitting on a bike seat. I searched on bike thong Austin and found this:
[Does anyone know the man with the red thong in Austin – not Leslie? - Yahoo! Answers](http://■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/question/index?qid=20080723073453AADgloI)
:D

I have spent my share of time in Circle C and have not run across – thank you, Jesus – the red thong guy.

MM2K, ask your dd to get you a Leslie refrigerator magnet set for your birthday! Of course, I think you can order them online yourself, but not as fun.

I’ve seen the thong guys several times in the Whole Foods area at 6th and Lamar. If you want to see him, he seems to be riding by around 5ish in the afternoon.

It’s all part of Will Wynn’s conspiracy to Keep Austin Weird…I guess it’s Lee’s conspiracy now.

Not to hijack the thread, but how is the LGBT community at UT/in Austin? Anyone here have an idea?

not sure there is 100% consensus on a gay gene. i think the consensus is that sexual diversity is a result of nature and nurture.

DarthRosenberg–it’s not quite as visible as the LGBT community in a city like Dallas, but the reason for that is because they are much more accepted into mainstream society and integrated into the normal social scene. In Dallas the gay scene is completely seperate from the mainstream scene, but in Austin it’s really merged together.

The queer community at Texas is much more vocal than the queer community in the rest of the state for this reason–it’s much more accepted.

Thanks Ranger, that sounds awesome. Yet another reason to love UT before I’ve even gotten there!
