Ok, let me start off by saying I made a huge mistake in the college admissions proces from high school. I had above average SAT Scores (2220) and above average SAT Subject Test Scores but I only applied to local state universities except one: Rice. I was waitlisted at Rice and I don't think I'll be getting in since it will be closed down soon.

The reason for my being waitlisted I believe is my freshman year grades: I had a couple of Cs. I've had all As for the rest of my high school career. Anyways, I will be attending the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). I wanted to know what exactly I should do to enhance my chances of getting accepted as a transfer applicant to more selective institutions. I will most likely be reapplying to Rice and maybe Columbia and Cornell. What other transfer colleges should I apply to?

I will be an engineering major w/ pre-med courses because I hope to go to medical school. I just don't want to stay at UTD because I don't think I'll be able to achieve my full potential there. Also, in terms of reapplying to Rice, what should I do? I know getting the highest grades possible at UTD is neccessary to compensate for my somewhat poor high school grades but will it be enough? I really want to transfer after the first year but I don't know if it would be wise. Thanks for your feedback and sorry if i asked too many obvious questions.

Could your hs Guidance Counselor speak with someone at Rice to fine out what might enhance your application a second time around?

Most importantly, ask yourself this question: if you do not succeed with your transfer applications to schools such as Rice, Cornell, Columbia.... will you be happy to stay at UTD? If not, you simply must identify some schools with higher transfer acceptance rates. You cannot put all of your eggs into the basket of schools with single digit or low double digit acceptance rates.

Do not make the same mistake with your Transfer applications as you did with your freshman apps of applying only to very selective school(s) plus an instate that you don't like.

Find schools which have the elements you like at Rice/Columbia/Cornell but are easier to get into.

Would it be wise if I called Rice and asked them? Also, is UMich a good safety? I wouldn't mind going there. Oh and if i don't get into a significantly better university, I will most likely be staying at UTD because it's free.

Oh and should I wait 2 years before attempting to transfer to Columbia? because my HS grades were OK but not AWESOME. Columbia is my dream school but i wouldn't mind going to rice

I am transferrring to Rice this year with junior standing. I applied during my freshman year with a 4.0 GPA for the 1st semester taking calc, chem, bio, etc. I was rejected. I called Rice and asked what I needed to do to enhance my application for the following year. They gave me some good advice and now I will be joing the Rice class of '10.

Basically, I'm looking for more prestigious schools that I still have a chance of getting into and would offer me good aid so I can convince my parents to let me go there since I'm on a full-ride right now. I picked Rice, Cornell and Columbia because they are all very generous with aid. Any other suggestions?
