Hi,
I'm a college freshman at American University. As first semester progresses, I'm thinking seriously of transferring. One of my top choices is Barnard College, which I was waitlisted at as a first-year applicant. My college GPA will, God willing, be in the 3.7-4.0 range. My SAT scores were a 560 in math and an 800 in verbal. My high school GPA was erratic, due to changing schools; I had a couple C's and even one D, but took lots of AP courses, got fives on them all, and have great letters of recommendation from high school teachers. I'm wondering if I'm being unrealistic? Has anyone been through this process before or had experience with the Barnard admissions approach. Input would really be appreciated, thanks so much for reading this and helping out.

No specific knowledge re Barnard, but a few points.

High school recs are unlikely to come into play. College recs are important this time. Your college GPA looks good.

Do you have an idea of why you weren't accepted last time (hs GPA? recs? essays? other?) If you can, try to find out... maybe through your hs GC, so that you can try to overcome that in this year's application.

Good luck.

A quick guess is that you were waitlisted on account of the C's and the D, and these low grades will be much less a factor this time. You were very close last time, so your chances ought to be good, depending on how much space they have for transfers. The admittance rate isn't really high though:
* Total number of transfer students who applied: 467
* Total number of transfer students who were admitted: 119

We're in the same boat. I was waitlisted by NYU Stern School of Business when i applied as a freshman, and I'm going to try to transfer in as a sophomore.
