Transfer after one year?

I'm currently a freshmen at Duke University. Because of some recent health problems within my family, I want to go to a school closer to home.

Right now I'm only considering applying to Stanford.

How hard is it to transfer after my first year? Which would mean I apply after the 1st semester with only one set of grades?

I can only estimate my GPA, but I'm confident it would be above 3.7.

If you transfer as a sophomore, your high school grades and SATs will play a big factor. However, transferring to Stanford is a high reach for anyone so you should look to some other schools in California as well (though I don't believe the UCs accept sophomore transfers).

Check Bourne's post #374 on last year's S thread:

Between their extremely low admit rate and the fact that they apparently prefer to get age/experience diversity in their transfer students that they can't get in Fr admissions, first year transfers are very difficult.

While this doesn't mean it can't happen, do consider some UCs or other schools in CA.
