Hi all,

The private schools I applied to (as well as the ones I'm waiting for decisions from) are very expensive. So much so that it doesn't look likely that I'll be attending any of them.

I was accepted to SUNY Binghamton, and New Paltz, but am kicking myself for not applying to Stony Brook. I want to study Journalism and I know SB has the best program in the SUNY system.

The suggested application deadline was March 1st but they accept students on a rolling basis after that date. Is it still worth applying? Do I have a chance of being accepted?

I have a 3.8 college GPA with a 4.0 this last semester.

Any advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Where did you get the info that SB has the best journalism program?

Friends, professors, advisors… maybe there were wrong. It’s all a matter of opinion and I probably shouldn’t of used such definite language.

I wasn’t trying to offend anyone or cast a bad light on a particular institution. I wrote the contents of the thread hastily. If I could revise the post I’d say, " – and I know SB has a competitive Journalism program." I’m interested in the institution as I am in every school I applied to… thats why I applied to them. I would like to have SB as an option… because after doing research, have become interested in the school.

OK, I was just curious if that was posted anywhere. I know SB is very strong in the sciences but hadn’t heard about the journalism program. I assumed that New Paltz was stronger in that area. SB also has a large communter population, don’t know if that matters to you but a lot of kids on Long Island go there and either commute or go home for the weekends.

@LilyMoon: SBU has the only school of journalism within the SUNY system. It’s new, but the lady giving the tour (the assistant dean or something?) on Admitted Student Day has won three Emmys for the work she did at CBS, so it seems pretty legit. Also, the newsroom is awesome.

ray - thanks for that info.

True. Having a School of Journalism – as opposed to just a major – is nice because it gives them flexibility from the oversight that other programs have. They have their own Dean, their own budget, their own graduation requirements. I know I’m paid to say this, but they’ve really done a great job putting it together the last few years.
