Transfer - Applying for a major program- how to be a good candidate

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your insight!

I started my college journey as an economics major, before switching to business/entrepreneurship. I have always been passionate about the environment and I realized I do not want to study economics/business- I decided to take the year off to explore my passions. During my year off, I have held three environmental internships, solidifying my goal of majoring in environmental analysis/environmental studies.

I know that as a transfer applicant, you’re supposed to demonstrate that you’ve performed well in the classes related to the major program to which you are applying.

Is it okay that I haven’t taken any courses in environmental studies but am applying for an environmental studies program? Or if I apply for environmental science without having taken any hard science classes before?

I really appreciate any advice! Thank you.

For a sense as to how your academic background has prepared you for your intended change in direction, you might try looking at the major requirements at colleges with notable environmental studies programs (see link, below). In your case, you may want to pursue ES through a social sciences track, which would align well with your interests and goals.

Even if a college admits you as a transfer without having taken the frosh/soph level courses for your intended major, you may need to “catch up” on them, which can delay graduation after transfer if those courses are needed as prerequisites. This can be a financial issue if you are currently at a low cost community college but intend to transfer to a more expensive four year school.
