Current School: Liberal Arts College, ranked in the top 50 lac
Current Standing: First Year Freshman
Schools that I somewhat plan on applying to: List is way too long at the moment. Plan on applying to 10 or so. But Vanderbilt, Rice, USC, Emory, UNCH for sure I think. Looking for suggestions here. I will need some fin aid so I’m mainly looking at private schools. Not interested in my state school for a number of reasons.
Anticipated Freshmen GPA: ~3.8 first semester, could be a bit higher depending on finals.
HS GPA: 3.7 uw, took 10 AP classes
ACT: 34
Current Major: This is where it gets a bit tricky. The main reason I’m looking to transfer is because my school doesn’t offer computer science. If I stayed here I would likely major in math and econ.
College ECs: Pretty decent for one semester. Research assistant with a prof next semester. A couple other things that I don’t want to list.
High School ECs: Held a lot of leadership positions, pretty strong overall.
Recommendations will be alright. I’m asking my professors next week.
I want to study computer science and combine it with math/statistics. The problem is I don’t have any CS classes to show because I can’t take any here. The only class I’ve taken was AP Compsci in high school (I got an A). In terms of math, I am finishing linear algebra right now and next semester I will take multivariable calc.
My main questions are:
-Am I competitive at the schools I listed?
-Am I at a severe disadvantage by applying as a CS major? (should I apply as a math major instead? And how hard would it be to get into CS classes if I declared as a math major?)
-Should I take more math classes next semester? I could also try to take Number Theory or Numerical Analysis if that would help.
-Other schools I should look at applying to?
Thanks!
