Decent extracurricular's in high school. Lots of sport.
I also travel a lot. I've been around Europe, Iran, India, Australia.

I did get into cornell but not stanford with a stats somewhat equivalent to you.

YOur'e at sc man! Isn't that good enough? Well I guess if you didnt try youd never know if you would have gotten in to these elite schools though.... so I guess it makes sense that you wanna transfer. But yeah to comment on your stats they are really good but not sure how good they'll "look" since you only completed one year. you should be fine as long as your excuse for transferring doesn't come off as trying to attend a school based on its prestige and lore. good ec's btw

thanks .... oh so they prefer junior transfers do they? i know stanford do but what about Cornell? .. thanks again and ... blackdream what college were u at before transferring .. also can i please see your stats :) ...

I dont think they really prefer junior transfers, Im looking at a list of transfer students who have been at stanford a year and there are a lot of sophomores

ok ... thats cool ... but stanford typically accepts what? 50-100 transfers out of 1000-1500 applications a year?

my stats.

Immigrant, diffcult childhood.
1500 SATI
750+ SATII for math and physics, 600+ verbal ( i don't give exact scores for personal safety concern)
4.0 GPA at De Anza college (community college)
3.5 GPA at highschool (somewhat diffcult to get As if you can't speak English)
7 APs, all of them +4, and there are more 5s than 4s
I wrote and published a book (never mentioned it before here, but now the college fuss is gone so)
research in biology with a stanford professor.
two letters of reference (one directly to the dean of admission) from STANFORD's professors, with one of them (sorry, i cannot disclose their names) regarded as a "signficant stanford personality.

and that didn;'t do it for stanford, not even waitlisted. I doubt that my rejection has something other to do with my stats(there MIGHT be one or two people on this board get into stanford with lower stats), but nonetheless, a word of caution.

ahh ok ... im sorry.. where did u decide to go?

UC Berkeley, which will save me around 100000 USD of tuition.

Oh no, Blackdream choosing a public over an Ivy... you have surely angered 98.47% of CC. For shame; for shame. ;)

But seriously, now I'll respond to the OP.

If you can hold on to that 4.0 of yours through next semester, you should be in good shape for Cornell and some other top schools. Stanford's admit % is really low for transfers though. So apply, but don't be upset if you don't get in. Even for the other schools, nothing is a guarentee, but if you apply to several top schools (and this doesn't mean just apply to HYMSC because then all bets are off with their low admit %), you should get into at least once. And at the very least, USC is a nice school, so it isn't like you are in too bad of shape as it is.

Good luck

Yeah I realise that a lot of those school's are reaches for nearly everybody because the admit rate is so low. But i plan to apply to 7 or 8 top schools excluding HYP. USC is an awesome school but I guess I just don't feel its the place for me :) ... How is Cornell about transfers usually? Are they nice, lol.....

also, just say I didnt get in .. could I reapply as a junior transfer? And would a 4.0 GPA and more research and ECs be good enough then ? lol :) I'd hope so

I got into both ivy i've applied, brown and cornell.
but i choose berkeley, it's better

BUMPs in the road

Blackdream, I think I'd probably choose Berkeley over both of those schools too... I was taking a shot at the over obsession with Ivies on CC.

Hey, I've been 'spying' on CC for awhile, but this thread made me break down and join up. I'm a transfer student just accepted to Cornell for Fall 05. My stats are/were reletively weak compared to half of the folks on CC.

iamaniceguy - your stats stand out just fine, but it's been my experience throughout the application process that your essay WILL make or break you. As a transfer, you should show genuine growth and maturity in your essay/grades, as well as drive and motivation. originality is equally important. ALL colleges and universities want to see a well-rounded and focused transfer applicant.

Funny note - I chose Cornell over USC, and I'm from So Cal myself.

oh awesome ... where are u transferring from? do u mind posting ur stats

sure thing...

transferring from Wesley College (small, private, 4 yr). not a typical transfer student, though. just finishing up 4 yrs of active duty w/ the air force. I've attended 3 or 4 colleges to this point, out of location, convenience, etc. Wesley is where most of my recent units are from.

stats, hs:
gpa: 3.6 (grad c/o 2000)
one AP (english lit/comp)
SAT I: v540, m590 (only taken once)
SAT II: wr 630, hist 520, math 1c 640
class rank: top 15%, nothing amazing
very few ec's - mostly volunteer work through church and marching band

applied to several UCs (denied at all) and attended 1 yr CC immediately following hs grad. no ecs there, and gpa for that year was 2.2 (bombed first semester w/ a .8 gpa lol) enlisted w/ air force summer 01. finished associate's degree through the CC of the air force and Wesley. continued GE courses until now, plus involved myself in a bunch of air force related ec's:

current stats:
gpa: 3.85 (since first cc)
A.A.S. in Avionics Systems Technology (distinguished grad, top 5%)
ec's:
-airmen against drunk driving (transportation service)
-airmen's council (3yrs)
-airlift/tanker association national representative
-base honor guard: team leader, trainer, supervisor (2yrs)
-adopt-a-highway
-salvation army volunteer
-squadron volleyball team (3 yrs)

Comparatively, it's not much, considering the time span of 5 years. Big changes were to put more time into ec's as well as the applications (esp the essays).

oh ok ,.... coool .....
