transfer chances for a friend

Okay, so my best friend is also applying to UMD for Spring 2011.

HS Stats:
GPA: UW: 3.5 W: 4.2
SAT: 1050/1400
6 AP Classes
numerous EC activities: captain of cheerleading, VP SGA, class council, lacrosse, etc

College:
Currently a freshman and currently has a 3.6.

She applied last spring, and wasn't admitted, but really loves UMD.
She's instate and goes to an instate college.

We as a group don’t have a lot experience/information on transfers. But my gut reaction is that her SAT is what kept her from getting accepted originally. One semester of coursework with a good GPA is good but I don’t know if it’s enough to overcome that stat. She may want to do a whole year at her current school so she has a more robust college record and solid rec’s from profs to get her transfer solidified.

And…let me caveat that with…this is all just conjecture on my part…I have no hard facts to base this on. :p

I would be inclined to say the same thing. If she keeps that 2.6 for a second semester, she probably won’t have a problem. Meanwhile, she should make sure her credits actually transfer. I’ve known a few schools who swore their credits would transfer to UMD, but not a single one did. (There were mostly community colleges)

Ha, Gina meant to say keep the 3.6 GPA, I think! It has seemed that they place a whole lot of emphasis on college grades, and the hs grades, scores, EC’s carry much less importance when applying as a transfer student.

Yes…that’s what I meant.

From my experiences, I think UMD wants at least 3-4 semesters completed before she transfers.
