I was curious as to what my chances would be for transferring to the University of Maryland--College Park. I am currently a 1st year student at Virginia Tech, and am enrolled in the College of Engineering. I have found that Engineering is not for me---not to say that I'm "failing out" because Im actually doing quite well--I made the Dean's List last semester:)
I was accepted to UMD-College Park out of high school, however, not for the Fall semester, but for the Spring. Here are some of my stats..

-High School GPA: 3.81
-Top 10% of Class
-SAT: 1120, 600M 520V ---Let me know if you think that I HAVE to retake them again....I took them during my 11th grade year..and never took them again. I am POSITIVE that I could do better, but am wondering if I can get in without a retake.
-College GPA @ Virginia Tech: 3.44
-Im instate--Resident of Maryland

-Also, in high school I had a TON of EC's....including..Varsity Soccer 4years, All-Academic A Team 2years, Tons of volunteering, food pantry at church, Engineering Internship at Reagan Naitonal Airport, SGA, FBLA, FCA--President, ect.

I would appreciate some feedback....Its a pretty stressful time right now just trying to decide what I want to do....I figure that UMD-College Park is a wonderful place to do that. Please let me know if you think that I even have a remote chance.

Thank you for your response--its greatly appreciated....Anymore responses? Again, Im INSTATE....however, Im currently attending VT and studying Engineering--3.44 GPA first semester/first year.

If it were me, I might retake the SAT I's, they make you take a second look. (If you want to leave that badly, you should be willing to do the extra work, right?) But I don't know much about college park, and is a 3.44 GPA good at VTech? Do you have a good reason for transferring that'll help you (like major unavailable)? Will your professors give you a good rec?

yeah...I should be able to get a good rec from my teachers. Also, I think that a 3.44 GPA is decent considering it is an Engineering Curriculum at one of the better Engineering schools. Dont you think that UMD would take this into consideration?

Good luck to you! You're trying to leave VT and my daughter is trying to get in. She has very similar stats and is trying to get into UVA and JMU as well. They have a better Poli-Sci program. We're in-state. She has a 1200 SAT, excellent EC's (very involved at UMD also), Dean's List, etc.

When are you guys applying? I know tomorrow is the date for Early Action, but does that really have a great affect on decisions? I am going to apply because it's right next to home.....

the application should only take a few hours to finish, but ill end up sending it in the next 2 weeks. I haven't taken a good look at the info for in-state tuition, but I might need to get stuff for that too...

I dont know If I should apply now or wait until I get my other decisions back. I was kinda hoping that UMD could kinda be my back up school. Incase I got rejected at all my choices now I would apply to UMD in may when I got my second semester grades.

Where are you going to school right now? Unless you are going to get significantly better grades / your grades are hurting right now, you should apply earlier just because of the number of slots. But if you can consider UMD your back-up school, than there is not hurt in applying early-- if a few dollars won't kill you.

Does UMD still ask for high school transcripts for transfers? How many credits do you need for them to not ask for high school transcripts or sats?

Is this by the time I apply or by the time I enroll at the school? Because im only a freshman and last semester I had 15 credits and this semester I have 16 so I should have 31. Sorry for all the questions.
