Transfer chances, help me out please? Somewhat unusual case.

Hey Everyone.

I've been posting around this site for a while now, but I haven't really got much feedback.

Basically, I am a high school senior at the moment and I've taken about 40 credits this year, 20 in the Fall and 20 in the Spring. I'm maintaining a 4.0 GPA at the community college which I am taking the courses. I've done some EC's here, including making Dean's List, the honor society, and some other accomplishments.

Because of some HUGE transcript delays at my high school, I was unable to apply to the majority of the schools which I wanted to attend, including my state's flagship school.

However, I have been given a full ride to a small, private relatively unknown LAC that has some good opportunities, including a potential Honor's program.

If I were to maintain my GPA, pick up some more EC's and demonstrate leadership skills, and perhaps even re-take the SAT (My score was in the 1850's/2400 - 1250's/1600), what are my chances of transferring into a top tier school?

I'm planing on being a Government major with an emphasis on international relations. My long-term goal is to attend law school.

Here are some of the school's I'm aiming for:

American University

George Washington University

George Mason University (HUGE safety, doubt I'll go even if I get in)

Boston College

University of Virgina

Cornell (Dream school)

Vanderbilt

NYU

Rochester University

Fordham

University of Texas - Austin

University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill

UPenn

Wake Forest

Any other good ranking school

Feel free to be as harsh as you'd like, I need some honest feedback.

Thank You.

Same boat. I’m taking community college courses in poly sci and ir for college too.

You could definately pull in a transfer to American with your current grades after retaking the sat. But what i heard American is after your money the most “family contributions”
Keep up the good work!

The real issue with top-tier government programs is that they tend to be wary of letting in transfer students. Most of those schools go to great lengths to secure the perfect entering class of government students. As a transfer student, your best bets will probably be UT, Michigan, and UNC. These schools all have excellent programs in the social sciences. I’ve said a million times that Michigan produces some of the brightest political science students I encounter. If you want to go to law school you probably don’t want to blow all your money on private schools anyway. I suggest sticking with the big public schools for undergrad - if you keep your record strong you’ll be cmpetitive for a spot at a major private law school.

Do you know if it’d be a good idea retaking it this summer? I’ve heard mixed things about retaking the SAT after already being to a university.

Can anyone shed some light on that?

@agc0319

Yeah, I’m definitely looking at those three public’s. Do you think I’ve got a good shot at them though? I’m actually a Texas resident so I’ve been told transferring into UT Liberal Arts as long as I maintain a 4.0 GPA is relatively easy, but then again it’s the interwebz.

Thanks, I don’t have any intention of flopping as far as my grades go.

I was actually thinking of taking a three-credit course this summer at NYU, Cornell, or Columbia to jump start my EC’s and maybe even strengthen my academic record as well. It’s pretty expensive, but I think it’ll be well worth it.

I think transferring to UT should be fairly easy for you, and I don’t think Michigan would be too difficult either. UNC can be a bit of a wild card, I’ve heard.

As for summer programs, NYU’s is just fantastic.

@agc0319

Sounds good. I’ll still apply to AU/GWU in a year and see what happens, though.

As for NYU, do you know if it’s worth asking my LAC to work out some kind of deal like the Financial Aid site recommends? [NYU Summer 2010](Summer)

2k = one class. :O.

Absolutely - you’d be surprised how willing a lot of schools are to negotiate prices if you just try.
