Transfer Chances...Help!!

I'm currently attending a California Community College and am looking to transfer fairly soon. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I graduated high school in 2004 with a 2.5 gpa, so as you can see, I've taken some time off. I've been back in school for a year and a half now, and have maintained a 4.0 GPA, in all courses, and am in the honors program. During my long break from school I traveled to Africa for two years and volunteered in two AIDS clinics and taught english in an orphanage. I came back when I was 20 and enrolled at a CC, but became involved in a very abusive relationship, which caused me to drop my classes and have 4 W's on my transcript. The next two years of my life were horrible, as I became someone I didn't even know. I worked three jobs to support him and I, while I was beaten deeper into an abyss of darkness as time went on. I left him two years ago, and moved back in with my family, since which time I have been back in school faithfully, and have done very well.

As far as EC's, besides traveling out of the county, I am a crisis counselor at a battered women's and children's shelter, I started a domestic violence club at my school, I volunteer with the ACLU, fighting for the rights of inmates, I work closely with the LGBT and lastly I write for the campus newspaper and am VP of the philosophy club.

As far as career goals, I would like to double major in journalism and gender studies, and then attend law school, and work in the civil litigation field, while doing pro bono work, defending women in abusive relationships and helping wrongfully convicted inmates get off of death row.

Btw, I am black also. I'd like to transfer to a top university...

What are your SAT scores?

Unless you can afford OOS tution at Michigan (COA is about 45k/yr), it might not be a good choice for FA, particularly compared to the UCs.

You seem to have a great story to tell! You have a great college GPA, showing your maturity since HS. But not only that, but you’ve had the time to do something with your life beyond academics with your experiences in Africa. If anything, THIS will be what makes you stand out from the rest of applicants. Truthfully, you have a great shot at many of your schools. However, just be aware that some of the schools you listed are VERY competitive (ie Stanford, LAC’s, Columbia) and just don’t accept a lot of transfers. So if you don’t get into all of your schools, don’t let this discourage you as you have obviously shown great maturity since HS!

I took the SAT’s back in 2003 when the total possible was 1600 and I got a 1480.

More replies please!!!
**akalboy? Do you go to U. of Southern Cal?

Just a random fact out there. Stanford accepts around 1.5%. Apply by all means, but don’t stress out over it.

I understand  Thanks…I’ll try anyways!

Yes I do :)

How do you like it?

Any other responses would be greatly appreciated!! Do I have a chance?!

Your experiences will make you stand out. And even though I don’t know much about transfer admissions, your case is unique. I mean you can’t be more “different” than other applicants out there. And coupled with strong EC’s, academics, you’re a strong applicant.

But regardless of your decisions, your story is inspiring :)

Bumpin this on up!
Help Pleaseeee!
