Transfer Chances? (Radio/Television/Film

I am an aspiring transfer student applying for Radio/Television/Film and UGS as my second choice. I am a freshman at a community college and I am about to finish my first semester. I did 15 hours this semester but I also took 6 hours of dual credit English my senior year. As of now it looks like I'll be getting all As except for one class in which I will most likely be getting a B. My dual credit classes count towards my GPA at my community college however so my GPA will be a 3.43. I have read that the GPA UT Austin uses for transfers is only for classes that were taken at an actual college classroom (i.e they give you credit for dual credit courses but the GPA they look at only counts for classes you took in college). If this is the case my GPA will be a 3.8.

I took the following courses this semester: GOVT 2305, HIST 1301, MATH 1314, HUMA 1301, and PSYC 2301. I am taking GOVT 2306, HIST 1302, MATH 1342, COMM 1307, and GEOL 1403 next semester. In the end I will have 36 transfer credits but only 21 when I actually apply.

I work part-time at Best Buy as a gaming associate. It is my first and only job and, since I don't really have any volunteer work or anything, is really the only official thing I can put on my resume. I got an award for a graphic design competition back in junior year of high school but aside from that I don't have any actual achievements for my resume. I have a lot of experience with video editing and compositing (I plan on focusing on visual effects) and use Adobe After Effects and 3DS Max quite often but as for actual achievements the main thing I can put on my resume is my job and my visual effects skills. I plan on talking a lot about my love for visual effects in my essays and my technical knowledge in my essays so I am hoping that sets me apart. I have been told I am a good essay writer (I have never made below a 95 on any college writing assignment without much effort but that may just be because it's community college) so I am not too worried about my essays so much. I'm pretty sure I can get at least one recommendation letter from my history professor and possibly my math professor (though the latter is unlikely). I don't know if a recommendation letter from a boss is appropriate for a transfer application but if it is that's another letter I can use.

So what do you think guys? Do you think I have a pretty solid shot? Or at least UGS? Also how is the visual effects department? If I am accepted I plan on doing a lot of VFX work and I want to make a VFX heavy short-film a-la Chronicle but with lightsabers by the end of my senior year as a side project (that won't come till much later though).

If it helps I am a hispanic/middle-eastern so I am hoping the minority card works in my favor.

Well? Anybody?

So you would be applying into the College of Communication, yes?

I am also applying as a transfer but for the fall of 2013. I have spoken to the vice president of communications, and he has told me that to get in, it is very competitive. The average GPA going into the school was a 3.84 last year. Basically, what he told me was just to get the highest GPA possible, that came first. Everything else is just bells and whistles, which ya know, still matters but not as much as your GPA. I say that you have a straight shot to get into UT, college of communication on the other hand will be tricky.

I hope this helps

If it is so difficult to transfer to UT Austin, for animation/visual effects etc you might consider

  1. UT Dallas [Courses in Arts and Technology at UT Dallas](http://www.utdallas.edu/atec/courses/)
  2. A&M <a href=“Visualization - Texas A&M University School of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts”>Visualization - Texas A&M University School of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts;
    They are both very good programs

@izziedodat I am applying for the Fall of 2013. The deadline is in March so I obviously won’t have all my classes for the spring of 2013 finished (which sucks since I am taking a RTF course and I am sure I could get brownie points if I did good in that class and if I got a letter from the professor). I’m not super confident about my chances at RTF since even if UT doesn’t count my dual credit classes into the GPA they look at it will still only be a 3.8. I’m hoping that I can get into UGS at least and take the same exact courses I would have if I were a RTF major. I plan on participating in a lot of the RTF clubs and organizations so I’m hoping all that extra work gets me into the RTF department the following semester. I don’t think your major really dictates your classes until junior year anyway. Your major is really just for show before that point.

@Ya Ya I’ve already look at both of those schools. In fact, before I realized how easy community college was and how I actually had a decent shot into UT, I geared my classes towards the ATEC program at UTD (hence why I took HUMA 1301 this semester). UT Dallas is my backup school since I’m pretty sure I can easily get in and I will be submitting my application for the UTD Comet program. From what I have read and the people I have asked who transferred I have more than enough to get into UTD.

A&M’s Visualization program is actually harder than UT’s (in fact I believe only about 30 people get accepted to the school and the graduating class for last semester was only about 40). If I can’t get into UT I won’t be getting into A&M. Plus I already toured UT and I love it. I’ve always been a UT guy and I much prefer Austin (although A&M is pretty damn good. Pixar and Dreamsworks are among the top recruiters).
