Transfer Chances UNC Chapel Hill

Im currently a freshman at Virginia Tech, trying to transfer to UNC Chapel Hill either for Fall 2013 or Fall 2014; UNC is my dream school but didn't bother applying in high school because it did not seem like a realistic hope.

High School GPA: 4.2 (weighted)
SAT: 1170/1600
AP's: Took 8 AP Courses (ab calc, bc calc, world hist, us hist, govt, french, chem, psych)
Not trying to bore anyone with high school extracurricular activities but i was very involved in the school-clubs, sports, volunteering hours.

Major: Economics; not ideal at VT hence why I am trying to transfer to UNC.
College GPA: Working very hard to be somewhere in the 3.3-3.7 range; Taking 15 Credits this fall semester and planning on 16 credits spring semester.

Preferably I would want to transfer to UNC as soon as possible (Fall 2013) but will high school GPA/SAT hurt me too much? Or will it be easier to do 2 years at Virginia Tech and use a higher amount of college work to apply with?

It’s typically easier to transfer as a junior. When you try to transfer as a sophomore, you are compared to all the incoming freshmen as well as the other sophomores trying to transfer. You should try to find some kind of volunteer work to do in college as well, UNC is big into that.
If you really want to try, then go for it, but know it might be easier if you wait a year.

thank you, so my chances wouldn’t be great doing it this year?

Your SAT scores are a little low compared to other sophomore transfers (1247), but if your college GPA ends up on the higher side, you would be average/above average. It also depends on what classes you are taking at VT.
If I were you I would go for it, but I say that because UNC is such a great school. You can always try again for 2014 if it doesn’t happen this year

Are you in-state for UNC? It helps, and it helps big.

unfortunately I am out-of-state (live in VA)
