Transfer Chances? Unusual Circumstance

Hey guys,

First of all I want to apologize for spamming this board with yet another "what are my chances" thread. I would happily search for students with similar circumstances but I sincerely doubt I'll find any, so I'm asking you. I'll just go ahead and spill my whole story.

I was accepted to UCF out of high school and attended for three semesters. My father committed suicide shortly before I left home which left me an emotional wreck; I shouldn't have left my family so soon after that and it reflects in my performance. I never went to class or got involved and eventually got kicked out of the school for hitting a 1.9 GPA.

I took the opportunity to go back home to my family and take time off from school. Once I reached a more stable state of mind I decided to enroll at a community college with more motivation to succeed than ever. With hopes of getting into a dental school one day, I've been completing the prerequisites for a degree in biology, including general chem, organic chem, bio, calc and physics. Since returning to school I've maintained a 4.0 GPA in all of these classes and will receive my AA at the end of the semester.

I have three classes left to take during the spring and I hope to apply to UF for summer 2012. My GPA will be just above a 3.0 due to the damage done at UCF, but with that huge upward trend at the CC. That's not including the grade forgiveness from retaking so many classes I failed at UCF, because UF doesn't recognize forgiveness. I think it at least makes a statement that I did retake them though (none of the classes I took at UCF were prerequisites for my program, thankfully).

So clearly I'm interested in my chances at UF. I would obviously be able to communicate the reasons I performed so poorly in my personal statement, but I wondered if the school will look strictly at overall GPA or consider the big picture with my academic recovery. I have a good amount of volunteering and work experience related to my future profession, being a chemistry tutor at my school and involvement in sports and extracurriculars. I would SINCERELY appreciate any input on my situation and if anyone has recommendations for improving my chances. I'm sorry if this was unnecessarily long as well!

Thank you and take care!

Bumping this once or twice.

In my opinion you have very good chances because a)none of the classes you failed at UCF were pre-requisites for your program and b) you clearly had solid reasons for your performance and have shown 100% improvement since you returned to school and c) you’re getting your AA at a CC rather than UCF, UF prefers CC transfers.

I’d be very surprised if you didn’t get in

You’ve probably heard this a lot, but your essay should be about how you overcame that tragedy and how you’ve changed as a person. Keeping a 4.0 GPA @ CC is great for UF but you should also have some community service input aswell.

You should be good to get in. I transferred here this term, 2.0 high school gpa, and 4 F’s from my first semester in community college. I waited a year, returned, and brought it up to a 3.9 by the time I got my A.A. In my personal statement I just put that I had to enroll in school to get my health insurance reinstated but was so sick/injured that I couldn’t even go to class and didn’t have the state of mind to get things removed off your transcript.

It’s probably way too late now, but typically in extreme circumstances such as a family death, or anything considered traumatizing you can petition to have the affected classes removed from your transcript entirely.

A friend of mine dropped out of another state school quite a few years ago, went to CC recently and transferred here as well with something around a 3.1gpa.

You’ll be fine, Good luck.

Thank you guys so much! That was a real confidence booster. I emailed a CALS advisor and she wants to speak with me about my transcripts to give me an honest evaluation. Hopefully everything works out! I’ve pretty much prepared my entire application including my personal statements which detail how I’ve overcome this tragedy; just waiting for the term to end so I can submit it. Thanks again!
