Transfer Chances?

I am currently trying to transfer into Emory after my freshmen year.

I got a 3.93 GPA this semester and have 15 credits so far. I am taking another 17 next semester. I am actively involved in competitive debate and have won several awards so far in college. I also am in the process of restarting the LGBTQ club at my school since it currently does not exist. I also am paid to work in the library.

In high school these were my stats:
3.63 UW GPA
3.95 W GPA
31 ACT
Got 4/5 on 7 AP Classes
I did debate for 3 years and was a captain. I also did a year of lab research at my local university and presented at a conference. I also spoke at my school’s TEDx talk as well. I also did a charity drive at my school for clothing donations.
My GPA is a bit low for a couple reasons. Mostly I was dealing with mental illness and family problems which drained my grades. I took 3 years of high school level math and science in middle school which went on my transcripts and almost all of those grades were B’s. Also my second semester freshmen year I got 5 B’s and 2 C’s due to those problems. After that I usually got a 3.86 UW GPA each semester onward. In my high school applications I mentioned the mental illness. This time I will just mention the family problems and say moving out helped immensely.

My biggest worry is that my high school scores/grades are still not good enough. Also I am worried that my college extracurricular are not that good or enough. There has not a lot of opportunities at my college so far.

@QueenAndrejes : You should alright or have a decent chance. It doesn’t make sense to worry about an okay/decent (your UW GPA would be in the bottom 25% of admits but not so much lower that it shocks adcoms. If anything, the AP scores help say “my school is actually rigorous, and even a sometimes B student can do well on rigorous standardized exams”) HS GPA if the ACT was decent, you had lots of APs that you did well on, and are doing very well at your current college. Just keep in mind that Emory only takes a quarter of its transfers assuming 1k apps for it. Note that they may evaluate partly based upon what you want to major in/transferring for and then compare to the courses you have taken (they’ll probably expect a normal level of rigor or as much progression as a freshman may be expected to make towards a major/some direction. Transfer for things like business or nursing can get hairy, and they will probably expect some of those pre-reqs to be complete).

Hey. First. Congrats on your hard work so far. Strong performance on APs indicates you capabilities.
Two things: please copy & paste Emory’s Prompt.
And second, proceed with caution in your discussion of how you have overcome your difficulties and are stronger for it.
