transfer chances

Freshman at Boston College (Honors Program)
Physics Major

PH 209 (Introductory Physics I w/calc) 4 credits (A-)
PH 203 (Indroductory Physics Lab I) 1 credit (B+)
MT 202 (Multivariable Calculus) 4 credits (A-)
CL 010 (Elementary Latin I) 3 credits (A-)
HP 001-002 (Honors Program Western Cultural Traditions) 6 credits (B+)

these are my predicted grades, they should only go higher, as I am doing better as the semester goes along. That would be 3.54, im confident in a 3.6 by the end of the semester though

ECs
College Bowl- 3 tournaments already, 4+ hours per week, very involved

College Republicans- some unsuccessful campaigning for kerry healey haha

Investment club- we play the stock market game and also help to manage the club's real securities portfolio

Society of physics students- just because all the majors are in it basically

High School

SAT: 1500/2180
GPA: 98.84 W/93.92 UW only academic classes
Rank 30/445 end of high school
AP: 7 5's and 2 4's

ECs
Placed third in the state high school bowling tournament senior year, named all state senior year, all county twice and all league three times

Academic Team- made third round of long island challenge high school tv quiz show, and round of 16 at half hollow hills invitational- organized tournament hosted by high school for five years

im not going to go into my long list of high school ECs because its probably not too relevant for the transfer process

as far as recs go, im pretty close with my honors seminar teacher (there are only 13 people in the class and hes also my advisor), so that should be a good rec, and also i should get a good one from either my math or physics prof, both of them I know pretty well.

Next semester my schedule looks similar, basically a continuation of everything im taking now, but ill be requesting an overload to take principles of macroeconomics, because I have an interest in also becoming an econ major but didnt have time to take a class this semester.

what do you think of my chances?

I actually have a pretty significant conern that I am not sure if we have talked about. Are you sure you are going to have the right classes? I don't know if you have been double checking all of your classes with ND but this is critical and if you haven't I would advise you to do so ASAP as it seriously can be a make or break issue.

As long as you do that and you get your 3.6 this semester and hopefully a bit higher next I think you have an outstanding chance. I think the classes are the biggest key for you right now.

I talked to the admissions office- i can use my AP credit for chem to place out of the first year requirement, so i think thats the biggest one that you might be worried about. The honors WCT class fulfills the BC core requirements for philosophy, theology, writing, and literature..and I have to take it or I would be declining the honors program. Basically my entire schedule is locked in, because i have to take physics, have to take calc, have to take a language, and have to take the honors class, and then first semester frosh arent allowed to overload so thats it.

It sounds like you are pretty close to what you need then, and if you are locked in ND admissions is usually pretty good about it. Just be sure to tell them that in your application if you are missing a class or two (along with being willing to do that class over the summer). Good luck and let me know if you need anything!

Also, stop posting, no one should have more posts than me :). Just kidding of course, I just need to get to work apparently!

haha, there are people with like 10000 posts so you really do have a lot of ground to make up

Besides the obvious that there is no place like ND can you share some reasons you want to leave BC it is one of my daughters back up schools? Thank you

There really isnt anything wrong wtih BC, I would recommend it to a lot of people, but I havent been happy here largely because of my whole admissions story last year (got rejected/waitlisted 8 places and only got into 2 non safety schools). Notre Dame was one of the schools that I really thought Id get into last year but i got waitlisted, and I just think I would be happier at Notre Dame than I am here. The only thing i have against BC is that their admissions process could use a lot of help, as although there are many very intelligent kids here, there are also people who do almost no work and seem to get by. Its not a real complaint, but it is something i dont like about it here. Also, you do get that feeling that BC is a place that rich new england parents drop their kids off for four years- the stereotype isnt completely true but it is in many cases. Anyway, im also applying to UChicago, still deciding if i would go there over ND, it may be more of my type of intellectual atmosphere but I would hate to lose the D1 sports haha.
