Hi all!
I am new to the forums and I am happy to be able to take part in it!

I am currently enrolled as a freshman (Class of 2016) at Iona College (New Rochelle, NY).
I applied to Binghamton as a transfer student going in as a sophomore in Fall 2013
I am happy to report that I was accepted on April 23rd to the Harpur School of Sciences with an intention in majoring in Poly Sci.
Now the only thing that concerns me is the credits transfer!
When and how will I be notified of whether my credits transferred? I already checked the transfer students page and I did not find my school to find course equivalents.
Knowing whether or not if my credits transferred is the only thing stopping from paying my deposit. I don't want to enroll only to find out that my freshman year was a waste since I have to repeat classes because I didn't get credit. Thanks!

P.S.
Does anyone know how tough or lenient Bing is with accepting credits from other schools?

Hi BXKeith94,

My name is Rob and I’m a Binghamton University Student Ambassador.

If you’ve received a C or higher in a college course, you will receive some type of credit for that course at Binghamton. This could be elective credit, gen-ed credit, place you out of a course, or even fulfill major requirements if applicable. This is guaranteed. Exactly how each course will transfer is determined based on the curriculum of the courses transferred and the college you have attended and how it relates to courses here at Binghamton.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks Rob!
You calmed some of my fears!
Just to be clear - My credits will transfer in some way?
Like for Instance I took a Religion course at Iona College. Even that course would receive some sort of credit at Binghamton? My main fear is that I wasted a year of college because Binghamton might not take the credits and I would basically be stuck in a situation where I sort of have to repeat freshman year.

Thanks for your help!

BXKeith94: Well, I do have to make one clarification. The courses do have to be academic in nature. In the case of the religion course, it would really depend on the syllabus, I imagine. It would have to be academic in nature. If you want to get into specifics on what would constitute academic or non-academic courses, I would recommend you contact Undergraduate Admissions and ask them specifically about this course.

Hi Rob,

Yeah, this was a concern of mine too. I’m at Oneonta right now and I’m enrolled in a Mass Communication course, a Media Law Course, and last semester I took another Communication course because these were all required for the Mass Communication major at Oneonta. I’m planning on duel majoring in English and Cinema at Bing. So would the required communication courses I took at Oneonta transfer over in some way at Bing even though there isn’t a communication major at Bing?

sam7194: All of the courses you described are academic in nature, so they would definitely transfer with a C or higher. They might give you gen-ed credits or elective credits towards the total number of credits you need to graduate, but they would definitely transfer.

The only potential situation where credits that have a C or higher wouldn’t transfer is non-academic courses. There are very few courses that would fall under that category.

Hi Rob, do you know the max number of credits for transfers? I have 76 credits coming in but I am planning to take summer classes. How many more credits can I take?
Thanks!

The only limits on transfer credits coming into Harpur is that no more than 32 non liberal-arts credits can apply to a Harpur degree AND you must complete at least 44 credits within Harpur college in order to graduate (which represents around 3 semesters of study). You can transfer as many credits as you like in, though, as long as you meet those requirements.

Other colleges have their own limits. For instance, CCPA limits it at 80 credits from a 2-year school or 88 credits from a 4-year school. If you aren’t in Harpur, I’d recommend e-mailing the advising office of the college you were accepted at to verify whether you’ll encounter any issues with the amount of credits you plan to take.

Hello Everyone!

I recently checked the DARS Report on BU Brain and I found that my transcript had been evaluated. For two of the following courses (Intro to Criminal Justice & Criminology) which I passed with B+'s, I got a code listed under BU Subject as “NLIB”
I was hoping if someone could please explain what that is?
*I tried looking for a BU Course Catalog but could not find one.

Thanks!

It is TOTALLY a guess but I would think it would be something like ‘nothing like in binghamton’. its possible they dont have a class like that that they can give you credit for.

Its just a guess… I would call them
