Transfer Essay Question: Going from single-sex to co-ed

As I begin to write about my reasons for transferring for the common app, I was wondering if it was a good idea to touch on the reasons for wanting to transfer from a single-sex school to a co-ed school, versus just talking about the academic opportunities that I'd like at another college. I don't want to sound like my reason for transferring is rooted in the fact that I miss boys, but at the same time the social life at my women's college is lacking in what is ideal for my needs as a extrovert.

Anyone care to chime in?

Men will offer a different perspective on your field, regardless of what it may be, than women. Such a perspective is essential to academic growth and your ability to understand your subject from multiple vantage points. That is one idea I’m using in my transfer essay, and like you, I also intend to transfer from a single-sex to a co-ed institution. As I’ve found from classes with guys, a perspective without men can become very limited and biased–fast. Of course, I plan to phrase that a little more eloquently in my essay, lol.

So you’re not talking about how you’d like to be apart of a different community? It’s so hard to write this without accidentally bashing your current school…

Believe me, I know, especially after my current school has bashed me for being incredibly feminine and straight. Avoid that path at all costs though. Again, if you state the academic value of men in class, it’s a way of saying that you want to be a part of a different community that is appealing to admissions and non-bashing of your current school. Where are you now, btw?
