The Common App Transfer Essay: What to Discuss

Hello all,

Im hoping to reach out to some successful transfers and even prospective transfers regarding the common application transfer essay. As you all know, there are not multiple questions for transfer students to choose from, all transfer students applying via common app must produce a statement illustrating: “your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve”

Moreover, I wanted to ask the CC transfer community, what did you focus on in your statement? Your reasons for transferring, or your objectives? Did you state your post-college intentions, or did you focus solely on college? And so on.

If there are any successful community college transfers who have any input on this, that would be especially great. I am currently a community college student gearing up to send my fall 2016 applications out within the next month, and obviously community college student’s statements differ from 4-year university student’s (i.e. reason for transfer is quite obvious)

I personally focused on my post-college intentions (graduate study and desired career), for as a community college student I have little to discuss other then completing my undergraduate career as a reason for transferring. I believe I have the flow and wordage correct on my statement, but I just want to make sure I am providing admissions with the content they want to see.

I personally am looking towards competitive schools (Cornell, Columbia, UPenn, UMich, GWU), and I believe my stats make me an plausible transfer, but the statement could truly be a deciding factor

So for prospective transfers, let me know what content your focusing on, successful transfers, what did you include in your essay that got you in?

Good luck to everyone, I know its crunch time with deadlines around the corner.

Hey @thenarddog1 I’m also transferring from a CC and trying at those tough schools too :expressionless:
but yeah I’m actually stuck on my personal statement too. I bought this book called The Transfer Book which has been really great and helpful and I can send you it if you want, its also available online!
Anyways, I’m thinking about discussing my gap year and personal experiences in my personal statement but the 500 words is just getting me, I want it to be concise and exciting but I also want it to include like every detail about me (which is never going to happen) I’ve written what seems like a 10000 rough drafts…
Since I’m transferring after only 1 year at community college, I’m just focusing on the reasons I want to transfer: my classes aren’t challenging enough, I want to be around students who enjoy learning, etc

I’ve read that most colleges just want you to get to the point: why do you want to transfer but I think its important to include any life experiences that have set you back/challenges you’ve overcome because thats what sets you apart from other students

Goodluck to you!
