I apologize in advance if this question is more appropriate for the transfer thread (which it probably is) but I was wondering if it's not a good idea to mention the core as one of my reasons for wanting to transfer to Columbia. I've been told (or rather, I've read on here) that it's generic and overstated but I really do like the unifying aspect of all the students taking the same classes, being able to have one big discussion, etc. I feel like I do have valid reasons for being interested in it, but is it just assumed in your application that you like the core, or is it worth mentioning? I'm coming from a large school with no such unity.

I think it’s worth mentioning but it shouldn’t be the central reason. I think just because a lot of people write something doesn’t mean it’s worthless to add.

Mentioning the Core shouldn’t be a problem; I did and was accepted as a transfer. It can turn into a generic piece depending on the way you talk about it so just make sure it’s well incorporated into the supplement, instead of it seeming like “oh, by the way, I like the Core”. I attend a large school too so the unifying aspect of the Core was something I considered as well.
