I was wondering if it's not a good idea to mention the core as one of my reasons for wanting to transfer to Columbia. I've been told (or rather, I've read on here) that it's generic and overstated but I really do like the unifying aspect of all the students taking the same classes, being able to have one big discussion, etc. I feel like I do have valid reasons for being interested in it, but is it just assumed in your application that you like the core, or is it worth mentioning? I'm coming from a large school with no such unity.

It’s certainly worth mentioning. Schools want well rounded students that are interested in a variety of fields. If you mention that the depth and range of the core appeals to you, it can only look better.
