I really want to transfer out of my current school due to the lack of prestige and the fact that I commute there everyday. I would like to know my chances at the universities listed above. I know my SAT scores LOW, but i am going to make them up in NOV. I had an F in one of my classes in my senior year because the teacher couldn't teach at all, would the colleges put emphasis on my F if i were to transfer next year? What would I have to do to make those colleges see me as a competitive transfer?

woah

first, just a few weeks into college you can't anticipate your gpa...this happens all the time on cc, people say they're gonna get a 3.5-4.0, but until you actually do it, it does not mean much...

3-4 weeks into school and you want to transfer already? my suggestion is to open up and try to like the school that you're at right now...colleges do not like students who are applying after one year of college, submitting only one semester worth of grades...some schools will not even allow you to apply

from what you've told me, the schools that you've listed are far out of your reach...i would start thinking of more reasonable ones if you want to get out that bad

coming from a second-tier school, you really need to put in two years of 3.8 -4.0 work to make the jump to northwestern, emory, etc, especially when they consider a mediocre college transcript...transferring with sub-par stats after 2 or 3 years is easier as the colleges put more emphasis on your work at college than hs, but if you want to transfer during the first two years of college a lot of focus will be placed on your hs record

again, put in two years and maintain something close to a 4.0, really try to get some meaningful ec's in there, and you would have a shot at those schools...if you really want to transfer after one year, submitting one semester of grades, you are setting yourself for a big dissapointment, lest you want to set your sites somewhat lower (u mass-boston, suny binghamton, etc would be the range i would look at right now if i were you)

hope that helped

Yeah, but i had already anticipated transferring before attending. Due to my laziness, I didn't really apply anywhere else.

Anyone else have any input?

if you want to have a serious chance, get your GPA at like a 3.8 and you'll be in good standing. Anything below and your chances get alot worse simply because of your high school GPA and everything. Just beast up college man and you'll be doing yourself a favor for transferring

and by chances I refer to the top schools your applying to, UVA, Northwestern, UNC

you're in at College Park and maybe GW...but your SAT's are terrible, I think the others are a crap shoot

he is by no means in at college park at gw, both of those are low reaches for him i would say

I'm sorry to be harsh but I have to agree with the preacher himself dufflebagjesus, 1590 SAT and a 3.45 and you are shooting for UNC????? Be realistic, they would throw your application out immediately in comparison to the average 4.0 GPA and 2000 SAT that UNC gets

.....and UVA, Northwestern, and Emory are arguably as hard or even much harder to get into than UNC

you have a decent chance(still a slight reach though) for GWU and Maryland College Park though....shoot for those

because of your High school record you will need way more than a 3.5 for one semester to get into those upper echelon of schools, like mfd3q said you need a 3.8 minimum for a good two years and then they will take a look at you and give you a possible chance who knows

Just so you are aware of it as an option, Virginia has an excellent community college -> in-state school program (I know a few guys doing this). If you get something like a 3.5 for two years, with the right courses, you can transfer directly into any of the state schools (William and Mary, UVA, and VTech are the big ones). I would look into this..I agree with many of the other posters, but I wouldn't be discouraged..Work as hard as you can for the next year or so, and post back in this forum, one year from now, with your GPA..Someone here can probably help you choose some schools. Good luck.

Thanks for everyone's input, I appreciate it. I'm probably aiming too high. Does anyone know if transfer schools look at SAT's completed during college? I'm retaking mine in November. And how about extracurricular in college?
