My son is applying for Fall 2014 transfer, from Hofstra, engineering, will be a junior. Any advice would be appreciated, mainly I have on campus housing questions, like what would be available, or suitable for a new OOS junior?

Hey there. GMU has good housing and also has what they call “LLCs,” short for “living learning communities.” Basically LLCs are groups of students living together who have similar interests and do some activities together. There is an LLC for engineering, and for green living, global studies, outdoor adventure, etc. Your son might be interested in joining one as a way of meeting more people with similar interests. My son is in the honors college LLC and is a sophomore in engineering. He lived with the same group of students and had the same RA both years… kind of a good way to have a small college feeling within a big university. Your son might be interested in the engineering LLC, but one thing to consider is that engineering is majority male students so living in an LLC that has more female students might also be appealing if he wants to meet more girls. Your son will need to apply for LLCs (short essay required), so make sure he checks the housing part of the GMU web site for details of when to apply, if that interests him.

Thank you Bookmouse! Do you think, then there will be on campus housing for a junior transfer OOS, if he applies for housing in a timely fashion?

My older son lives in the area, he went to JMU, and got a job in Fairfax. I really like the area. We never visited George Mason though. This son, who will be transferring, went to Hofstra, as a commuter, and they just informed him he lost his scholarship, so he is not going back to Hofstra.he is also an engineering major.

Hi Ddotjon, there should be no problem getting on campus housing as long as he applies on time. Mason has added a lot of new housing so there is not a shortage that I know of. Just play close attention to deadlines for both general housing and LLC applications. There is really no “bad” housing on campus, as most of it is fairly new, all housing is air conditioned and wifi, and everything is within reasonable walking distance. One thing we liked about the campus compared to others we visited is the walkable layout, it is not spread out through a city or town like some older campuses that have had to improvise for more space… especially important for tech & engineering majors as those departments sometimes get more distant quarters (or even another campus altogether).

Edit: Oops, right after I posted this I noticed in another thread that someone said some seniors at Mason were waitlisted for housing and had to live off-campus. I hadn’t heard that before. Since your son will be coming as a junior he may have priority over seniors. I would just call Mason’s housing office and ask them. I usually have great luck getting helpful people on the phone at GMU when I have a question.

Thanks, Bookmouse, if he is accepted, we will visit and ask those questions. I know housing for juniors and seniors is not always guaranteed, so he will have to make a decision and pay a deposit for housing ASAP.

I also read the posting you mention.
