Transfer from American

I've been at American University for a month and it's alright, but I can already tell that I don't fit in the way I want to. It's far too political (more than I could've imagined. I came in a fan of politics and I'm already sick of all things political) and I feel like I overlooked how much I wanted a football team (especially a competitive one).

With that said, I am in the honors program and my schedule, while mostly introductory classes, is quite difficult. I am worried that my GPA won;t be high enough to get it anywhere worthwhile. I have a 32 ACT, a 2030 SAT, I was top 11% in a pretty competitive high school and I hope to get a 3.something this semester (although I'm not sure where in the 3s I'll end up...) and I was wondering what schools would be a good fit for me, both socially and academically.

Any input at all would be very helpful and I apologize if this is long-winded, I am just unsure of where I can get in that suits my needs.

Thanks in advance

Do you plan to stay for the full year, or just the semester?

If you want out ASAP, you could contact the other colleges/universities where you were accepted last spring, and find out if it would be possible to enroll for the second semester. Some might be able to re-activate your application and let you do just that.

Even if you can’t get an easy admission by that route, you can make plans now to take a leave of absence from American at the end of this semester. With only one semester of college credits, your HS record will be much more important than it will be after a year. Some institutions will not consider you to be a transfer student yet, and will just put you into the freshman applicant pile.

The most important thing you can do right now, is to get the best grades possible at AU. Take advantage of your instructors’ office hours so that you can resolve any difficulties that you have with the material you are learning.

Not everyone at AU is interested in politics. You may find out that you like it better than you thought after you give it a bit more time.

Wishing you all the best.

i was in the same boat as you, but am now a sophomore and am in the process of deciding where to apply as a transfer right now actually. it sounds like your hs stats were pretty strong, and since you are unsure about your ability to do well in your classes at AU, i would also suggest that you take a leave of absence at the end of the semester if your gpa is lower than a 3.5 just because that could your limit options.

as far as which schools would be a good fit, that never gets any easier, unfortunately. i’ve been using collegboard.com’s college matchmaker to just get a rough list of schools to look into. think about what kind of environment you’d like to live in (state, school size, urban vs rural, sports, etc). you can even use the matchmaker thing to filter schools by many factors including the competitiveness of their football team. in order to decide where you’ll fit in socially, check out uni go.com (without the space) which has student reviews of their campus and the social scene at their school.
good luck!
