Note: Posted this in other thread, I think it was wrong one though...

Hello Everyone:

I am a freshman physics major at Cal Poly SLO. I don't think that the physics program here can compete with a major research university like a UC or USC, so I'm looking to transfer.

My question is: how hard is it to transfer to the upper tier UCs (for physics) or USC from Cal Poly? My gpa is about 3.6-3.7, and I will have taken several junior level physics courses by the end of sophomore year (i'm looking for junior transfer). I have some Extracurriculars: (on board of directors to two clubs, volunteer work). I will try to obtain some sort of research experience during the next year.

Specifically, I'm looking to transfer to:
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UCSB
UCSD

You could definitely try. I don’t know if Physics is a competitive major, but it is difficult to transfer from a CSU to a UC. I think the main reason for that is because nobody knows exactly which units transfer between the two systems. For Fall of 2009, UCLA admitted 4/15 (26.67%) transfer applicants from Cal Poly SLO, 1/10 (10%) for 2010, 1/9 for 2011 (11.11%), and 0/12 (0%) for Fall of 2012.

As for the other UC’s, I suspect it will also be quite a long shot…especially for Berkeley. I don’t know about USC.

I’m a 2nd year econ major at Cal Poly who will be transferring to UCSD next year. I was accepted into USC last year as well but could not go because the school was too expensive. I have a 3.4 GPA, but in my humble opinion it’s a very luck-based process. I was rejected from every UC campus my freshman year, reused my same essays that I used for USC (they must have worked somehow…) and somehow got into SD. If I were you, I would focus on transferring to USC if that is your goal, because they do not really care where you matriculate from and are less focused on raw numbers and test scores compared to the UC campuses.

Also, a huge problem with CSU-UC transfers is that there is no concrete articulation agreement between Cal Poly and the UC system like there is with community colleges. The UC has very strict requirements for what transfers have to have completed before transferring that you kind of have to guess at as a Cal Poly undergrad, whereas USC was much more flexible with me.

For those still wondering:
UCSC: Admitted
UCSB:Admitted
UCSD:Admitted
UCLA:Admitted (Full tuition scholarship, will be attending)
UCB:Not admitted

My identical twin brother, same stats:
UCSC: Admitted
UCSB:Admitted
UCSD:Admitted
UCLA:Admitted
UCB: Admitted (Full tuition scholarship, will be attending)

Hello,
I’m currently a high school senior. I got accepted to CalPoly SLO for computer science. However, I got waitlisted at UCB, UCLA, and UCSD. I plan on attending SLO if I don’t get off the waitlist for any school. My question is if I try transferring to either of these campuses, would I have to do it after attending SLO for two years, or is it possible to transfer after attending one year such as when people transfer in between UC’s.
Thanks to anyone who replies
It’s not possible. Starting from scratch, can’t xfer after 1 year. Starting from scratch, people can’t xfer between UCs after one year. UCs only accept xfers that are junior standing (standing is determined by units, not years in college).
