I was at University of California at Riverside for 2 years studying bioengineering but got dismissed due to gpa (2.5) being too low. I’m now at a community college near SJSU and want to know if I should try to get into SJSU for computer science. I don’t have a gpa at the community college since I entered this month. I currently live with my parents near SJSU (10 minute drive), if that matters.
I have read https://www2.calstate.edu/attend/counselor-resources/Documents/transfer-2017-admission-impaction-chart.pdf
A counselor suggested I complete AS-T for computer science so that I’ll at least get a CSU for computer science. The agreement is a guarantee to a CSU for my major but not a specific campus.
https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/transfer/Pages/ccc-associate-degree-for-transfer.aspx (AS-T)
My UCR transcript completed most of the AS-T requirements and so I’ll be done with them all by upcoming spring quarter.
My main questions are:
Should I enter SJSU as a math major and minor in computer science?(transfer rate was 100% for math major apparently)
I only need 5 more classes after this fall quarter to finish the requirements. Should I take 5 - 7 classes for winter and spring quarter? So that I can repair the gpa I got from my UCR a little. Would doing this increase my chance of getting in SJSU for CS? This is assuming I’ll get high grades( B+ and above) in all these classes. I could take classes at multiple CCs
Should I just give up transferring within a year and take two years at CC? This would make my UCR transcript completely useless, I think. I’m not sure if universities will even accept my transcript since I’ll have so many units.
You need at least 60 semester units for transfer dude. Once you get 60 by spring of your second year then you can start applying for San Jose State. Community Colleges run on the semester system. Best!
http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/impactionresultstransfer/index.html says that, for fall 2018, SJSU CS admitted transfer applicants with at least 5 course requirements completed and a 3.50 GPA. The similar software engineering major admitted with at least 4 course requirements completed and a 3.30 GPA. (GPA includes all transferable college courses.)
If you apply for transfer admission as a math major, you need to be willing to graduate as a math major. Changing to CS after enrolling requires a high GPA: http://www.sjsu.edu/cs/practicalities/major-change/ .
You may want to consider CSUEB or SFSU, which are less difficult to get into for CS.
If your GPA at UCR was 2.5 in major-related courses, you should have (barely) met the threshold for changing into bioengineering: https://student.engr.ucr.edu/policies/requirements/majorchange/bien.html .
Santa Clara University is also good choice too. Is private but they are well known in the Bay Area.
I have 90+ credits even when converted to semester credits I have 60+
I entered UCR as a bioengineering major after highschool (I didn’t major change when I was at UCR). I’m under the impression that a CS degree from SJSU is valued greatly more than most other CSU. If I enter as a math major, I’d be willing to finish my degree as a math major and a minor in cs.
I’m not sure if I’ll even be allowed to take more classes since I have too many credits. I’m planning on asking a counselor if it’d be better to wait an extra year and just completely let my UCR transcript go to waste.
My bottom line is that I am willing to restart from the beginning and spend two years at CC and then transfer to SJSU (on top of the two years I spent at UCR)
