Transfer From Stony Brook

So its been almost two months into my freshman year and I cant stand Stony Brook. I live 40 minutes away and commute, so theres no way im getting involved here with all the driving back and forth… I have made no friends, and the school just sucks for me, other than the education. I also am undecided, and have no idea what to do.

I was thinking of doing a year here, getting some basic classes done (calculus, science elective, etc…) and then transferring out. I think i am looking at more of a business route for my major anyways, and Stony Brook is not well known at all for that.

Does this sound reasonable? Schools im looking at transferring to are also mostly commuter schools such as LIU Post or Adelphi.

Wouldn’t you have the same problems if you transfer to another commuter school? My suggestion would be to apply to other SUNYs like Binghamton, geneseo, etc. If money is an issue, transferring to elite schools will most likely get you the highest financial aid, although it will be more difficult to get in. Best of luck

Can you afford to continue at Stony Brook but live on-campus, or share a rented apartment or house near campus? Having a 40 minute commute is going to be lousy . Also, it is going to be very difficult for you to make friends if you are always either in class, driving, or at home 40 minutes away from campus. You can fix this without changing schools.

Are the other schools that you are considering significantly closer to your home?

Yes. They are about 15 minutes
