Transfer from Uconn to SUNY?

Im not liking university of connecticut and want to transfer next semester to a SUNY. i was thinking stony brook, but more likely binghamton. is that a good idea?

What’s it been? A week? If it was that easy for you to determine you are unhappy why did you enroll in the first place?

^Parental pressure, as well as the illusion of prestige, can strongly influence one’s decision to enroll. I, for instance, am not at my institution of choice, and were it not for financial and familial factors, I would apply to transfer elsewhere.

thanks ksarmand for understanding. yea i know its only been around 2-3 weeks (my parents actually asked me the same question as you kobudnik) but uconn just wanted what i thought it to be. im a new york resident so a SUNY will be thousands of dollars cheaper. im still not sure which school to transfer to. btw just saying 1 out of 3 college students transfer whether its 2 or 4 year institution

What are you not liking about UConn.

Which SUNYs have you visited? What did you like about each?

I can understand the financial savings. :)

Ksarmand…

Aren’t you at Harvard?

Aren’t you liking it?

ARe you there because of the generous FA package?

Where did you want to go?

i guess here at uconn i feel like a fish out of water and would like to be back in ny, especially since i know a few people who go to the sunys im thinking of(stony brook and binghamton). i figure even if i am not liking the college i transfer to, at least it will be the cheapest option :] i think stony brook may be for me since i live on long island and therefore would be very close

My son transferred to a SUNY and he’s really happy there (New Paltz). One of his good friends went to UConn and hated it at first but ended up making the best of it. He joined a fraternity and made it work. I’m not suggesting you do that, it may not be right for you, but make sure that you visit the SUNY campus’s you are considering and really get a feel for them. Bing might be a lot like UConn. Stonybrook is great for the sciences but has a large commuter population. What’s your major and what sort of school environment are you looking for?

Hm thanks for your input LilyMoon! Yea i heard stonybrook’s math and sciences are pretty rigorous and about half the student body does commute. My major is undecided so I’m kind of open to most schools as long as they have a wide variety of majors. For college atmosphere I guess I just want a school not as much (like Uconn) in the middle of nowhere. Im wondering where did your son transfer from?

Sounds like you need to clarify your reasons for transfer, want to be closer to home/save $ by commuting can’t beat Stony Brook ( good choice of majors), want to be away but not too isolated certain SUNY’s work ie: New Paltz, Albany, Bing (also good choice of majors). My son is at NP & dtr at Buffalo so I am all for the deal of SUNY’s for NY residents but you have to zero in on why your going to college and what you need/want from the experience.

My son transferred from the University of Miami. New Paltz was the polar opposite of that and even though he may miss a few things about Miami he is much happier at New Paltz. The student body is much more down to earth and the friendships are more solid. It’s more of a mix of different types of people from all different backgrounds. The location can’t be beat…it’s got a mix of a funky college town, Poughkeepsie malls and shops, a 90 minute drive to NYC and 2 hours to home. Far enough to feel like your going away to school but close enough to come home when the need strikes.

Well Coskat I understand what you’re saying. As for what I want from the experience, I want to get a degree without spending tons of my (parents’) money, as well as a fun social life to balance my academics. I really havent found anyone at Uconn, despite the large size of the school. Lilymoon I’m glad your son is happy with his transfer! I dont see myself being happy sticking the four years out here so I think I will make the move to a SUNY in the spring.
