Transfer from UCSC to UCLA

How easy is it to transfer from UCSC to UCLA?

Oh man, I've asked about this, researched countless hours, and well, it's about as hard as it was to get into UCLA from high school.

In high school getting into college is based on grades, EC's, essay, and other random factors.

Though the applicant pool is considerably less in number, transfering from UCSC to UCLA will be hard, if you don't have a good reason, like UCSC doesn't offer the major you want, you won't just be able to simply wing it. You'll be competing with all the CC people who have been working for it as well, and get first priority, and other UC applicants from the schools with better reputation, who want to transfer. Plus some state school and out of state people, though it seems they have less priority.

So, like high school, you'll need a great GPA and good EC's which may be hard to get at Santa Cruz, versus people who have been going to CC and working office jobs, etc. So if you're going to try to transfer make sure you do it from a school that you won't mind being stuck in for the last two years if you don't get accepted.

I got in to UCLA from UCSC for fall 2009 so its definably do able!

Why would you want to transfer to UCLA? UCLA is huge and not nearly as gorgeous as UCSC. Much as I love UCLA and all that it has to offer, it is, imho, an “undergrad factory.” Visit UCLA and be sure that it is what you want.

I was thinking of doing that for their Linguistic/CS major.

I have a half dozen friends who did it, it’s definitely possible.

I got an offer to attend UCLA as a guaranteed sophomore transfer in 2010 off of an appeal, with SAT scores of 1700 flat, and a gpa of 3.5 or less, no AP courses, so anything is possible.

and you were a ucsc student?

It’s possible. But really, you’ll probably will save yourself money and time just going to a community college that has guaranteed transfer track to UCLA. Why drop 26K on a uni you don’t really want to be at when you can save money and pay half that???

Just wondering, but have you researched UCSC’s linguistics department? Because it’s pretty freaking good. But if you’re really set on UCLA, good luck!

It is. I’ve been busting my butt researching all the linguistic programs that the UC’s offer, and UCSC has an excellent undergrad program, that I think is going to surprise many in the future. I’m transfering this fall, declared as a psycholing major. I personally like the depth of theoretical instruction in which the major’s core program is comprised.

On a side note, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, UCB, UCD, etc. all have good programs. California is fertile ground for linguistic research.

@bananaslug, absolutely. The only reason I’m thinking about UCLA is the computer science side of what I want, UCSC has the concentration in CS but UCLA offers a major that fully integrates the two. I haven’t done nearly enough research, and I’m sure I’ll end up staying at UCSC and doing fine. UCLA is just a thought.

That is, if your comment was indeed directed at me. My bad if not.

it wasn’t but it sounds as though UCLA is a good choice for you. Perfect actually. You have time to research and weigh the pros and cons, though. Good luck! :)

Haha, now I feel silly. Thanks though.

how did you do it? what was the reason you have to transfer? for my part, my concern is the personal statement because i suck at writing. i want to say ucla has a better mcd bio department and i want to take care of my family because my parents dont speak english. can i say that?? i am super worried.
