I just found out I got accepted to Pomona Undecided/undeclared and would like to transfer to Civil engineering with emphasis on Environmental.

My grades were less than stellar, with a 3.5 WEIGHED. SAT scores ranged from 2000 to 2050.

The thing is, I don’t want to go to this school to MAYBE be able to change majors, as I believe Pomona is amazing at Engineering, and a bit lacking from most other majors. I suppose I fear not being able to transfer and just getting stuck.

Do I need to first attend this college and do the undeclared before I have a chance to request to change major?
Do you know what GPA they require in which classes for transfer to be possible?

Thank you for any educated imput.

Wait until you take a few classes before you change your major. Given that you mentioned SAT scores, I’m assuming you’re a FTF.

Your first year will likely be all General Education (GE) classes, so having a major isn’t really THAT important at this stage. My only suggestion is that you take the engineering GE classes, i.e. Calculus, physics based calculus, etc. If you decide later on that engineering isn’t the best fit for you, then you won’t have to take a bunch of new classes as you’ve already passed the hardest GE’s on campus. For instance, I’m a biology major and I have to take the non-calculus physics sequence, but if I were to decide to switch to engineering then I would have to take a whole other sequence of physics classes.

After orientation, make an appointment with your advisor and they’ll help you figure out the best course of action.

Congrats on getting in!

When you come in as an undeclared major at CPP, your advisors are constantly going to pressure you to pick a major. So after your first quarter you will meet with them and if you already know you want to switch into civil engineering, you just made their job easier. I was accepted for civil engineering and my SAT score wasn’t as high as yours so I think you will have a good shot at transferring in.
