I have a question regarding how your GPA transfers when applying for a four-year institution. I went to CC right out of high-school, and basically stopped going to class and failed everyone one. I joined the Air Force shortly after… four years later, I’m going to a different CC, I have a 3.1 GPA. When applying to a four year school, will they only consider the GPA of the current institution I’m attending, or will they average it out with both CCs.
Thank you.
There’s two issues here: the first is getting accepted to a four-year university. The admissions committee will consider all of your grades, but the more recent ones will be given more weight (especially since it’s been four years and you’ve served in the air force since then).
But you asked about how “your GPA transfers” to a four-year university. If you mean how do they figure out what your GPA is when you start, you should know that four year universities almost always have transfer students’ GPAs start from scratch. That means for your cumulative GPA at your next school, your CC grades won’t be factored in at all.
I meant regarding for admissions purposes. The Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering requires a 3.0 minimum for transfer students to be admitted to their mechanical engineering program. I have a 3.1 right now, and I plan on having a 3.3-3.4 after the summer and fall. However, if they’re going to factor in the 12 credits I attempted and failed nearly 6 years ago, from a different institution than I’m attending now, it’s going to be very hard to even come close to 3.0 and I might as well pick another career/major. And ASU is on the lighter side of transfer requirements for engineers, which is why I’m heavily considering them. My out-out state tuition eligibility for veterans is time-sensitive.
You should probably check with the individual school(s) about minimum GPA requirements to be sure. But in general, for the purpose of minimum GPA requirements, schools go off of the current institution you’re attending. I applied as a transfer student to a bunch of schools and despite having done coursework at other universities (which they did look at) my overall GPA was taken solely from my current school.
tl;dr: Double check to be sure, but I would be shocked if they considered you under the minimum GPA requirement.
Thanks a lot @llamarocker. I’m still awaiting confirmation from ASU… however they are just one of many of the schools I’m looking at.
Apparently they WILL factor in the 12 credits I attempted, which is odd coming from a University that isn’t very selective. I just don’t see how credits attempted 6 years ago are relevant to my current institutions GPA. I didn’t even have a declared major in 2009.
