I am currently a freshman at Marywood University and I am looking to transfer to UMD next year. Since it is only the end of the first semester, I only have those grades to share with you, which are all A's and B's. I also write for the school's paper, work as a DJ for my school's radio station, and am about to take a leadership position in a club I am enrolled in (Public Relations Student Society of America - this is also related to my major). I am thinking of joining Student Government to show my leadership schools and boost my chances of being admitted. I plan to participate in all of these things at UMD and also run club level track and field.

The reason why I did not include my high school statistics is because UMD does not require your high school grades if you have completed 32 credit hours in college. By the end of my second semester, I will have completed 33.

Let's just say my final GPA comes to between 3.5-3.7. With all this in mind, what are my chances? Thanks guys.

What will be the program you are applying for. I can tell you through my son that the Scholars is incredibly hard to get into as a transfer. They are informed that if they transfer out of the program it is unlikely they will be able to transfer back in.

I would google transfer admittance rates. I know ly that 28K applied for freshman and only 4K were accepted, thus admittance was @14%

Also your gpa means nothing if you are taking basketweaving 101. If you have a 3.5-3.7 with classes that match what freshman are taking in your program than you have better chances.

Our DS is a freshman in International Studies carrying a 3.5-3.6 his courses are
Poli Sci/Govt
Econ
World History
Stat
Eng
Scholars Seminar
ROTC

Also because of AP scores his Eng, and History are not the typical 101, it is the class after that

Wow that's intimidating, but thanks for all of that...I am planning on transferring into UMD's school of Journalism. I researched their acceptance rate and I found that 60% of students who applied last year were accepted (according to collegeboard.com). Remember, I also am not going to admit by high school grades because I had some very rough personal experiences during my junior year which were reflected in my grades and SATs.

I also forget to mention that I took all general education courses during my first semester and, according to my academic advisor, all of my courses that I am taking next semester are transferable as well. On top of that, my academic advisor was a professor at the school of Journalism at UMD for several years. He said he would do all he could to get me accepted (he still has several key connections at the school). Will this really set me apart from the rest of the applying crowd? Thanks.

My S is a freshman in Journalism. This semester he's taking Intro to Journalism, two honors courses (one is journalism-related but not required for J-students), an honors humanities course, American Government, and a language class. Journalism students are also required to take a Grammar for Journalists class, but he tested out of it. :)

Next semester he will be taking another Journalism class - I believe it's the one affectionately referred to as Journalism Boot Camp. (Sounds like a weed-out class.) He registers for spring semester tomorrow, so I will know more then.

I think the fact that your advisor was a Journalism prof at UMD will help you. Keep up those grades and I think your chances are pretty good. Good luck!

Thanks, I mean I already registered, but let me know what he is taking next semester if you can so I can see if it matches up with at all with my next semester's classes. Thanks.

Hey, I think you've misunderstood the requirements. Do you have 32 credits right now? Or is that after Spring semester?
Assuming you don't have those credits until spring, UMD requires you to submit your HS transcripts and test scores since you don't actually HAVE those at least 30 credits offically yet. I hope this helps you somewhat. You sound like a good candidate though! Good Luck!!

You're right about me not having 32 credit hours right now, I do not; but by the time I apply (regular application deadline is June 1st) I will have 33 completed. I would like to apply as an early applicant but this would mean that I would have to submit my high school grades and other scores. Judging by the downward trend I had during high school, I feel that this would hurt me...
