Transfer Housing USC, any advice?

Hey everyone, I was just admitted as a transfer student to Marshall and I’m looking at on-campus housing options for next year. Would anyone be willing to give me the run-down on the best potential housing options?

For reference,

  • I’m most likely bringing a car to USC
  • I’m very social and hope to be around an active/friendly community
  • Money shouldn’t be too big of an issue, unless I get some totally unexpected FA
  • I’m looking specifically at Cardinal Gardens and Webb Tower, but honestly, I have no idea what I’m doing, so any advice would be awesome.

Thanks so much!!

Is housing app open for you to complete? If you can sign up for Village do that - they would be titled Residential Colleges (Cale, Cowlings, Nemivrosky, Priam), but I am thinking they may be off the table for sophomores at this point as they filled up for soph housing reg which happened a few weeks ago…You are on the right track for the other ones actually, Webb Tower and CG and Century would be the next choices. Webb would be a little nicer and newer, but CG and Century while older are right across the Jefferson and have a community feel. Any of those would be my vote for what it is worth. Not Parkside Apartments and the other ones listed for sophs are a bit off campus and while ok, I would rank them lower.

Yup! I put in as much information as I could, but it’s considered incomplete until I’m assigned a room in mid-May.

You should be able to edit choices after you submitted and it won’t affect the time you submit. But get them in the order you want. I would leave Webb Tower as a choice in case Village is a no go. It was the coveted place for freshman to get, then they took it away as a freshman option when Village opened. CG and Cardinal have AC too, so any of those will be fantastic, Webb is inside campus, and the others are on the outside perimeter, so not a big diff location wise. Look at the perks and see if they have things you like. Maybe CG and Cardinal are more social than Webb, idk, but they could be. Any of those will be great, so don’t sweat it. So glad you are getting to submit now, you are getting it in ahead of some of the RDs that are still deciding on USC and not putting in a housing choice till they visit.

The Village is all sophomores, and filled up the first day of the housing lottery, so I’d say it’s a no-go. Parkside Apartments and Webb Tower are both on campus actually, though Webb is a lot nicer and has A/C. Parkside Apartments is OK and they recently renovated it, but still no A/C and they’ve been having issues with mice this semester.
Century and Car Gar are just OK: right across from campus, so very safe, and both have A/C, but they’re older buildings. I lived in Webb freshman year and LOVED it (though it does fill up fast) and Century sophomore year, which was fair – not as nice as Webb, but okay. Century also has a lot of transfers, and the ground floor is a parking garage, so it’s very convenient if you have a car. I will say, though, none of these buildings are very social – once you’re in an apartment setting, your housing isn’t really a source of community (apart from your roommates).

@LayraSparks Love it when you jump in! I have a freshman rocking it in Birkrant this year and in Villages next year and understood it to have been full as well, so don’t understand why regular decision applicants are choosing it, but I guess everything shows up even if full…

Seems like we feel the same about housing, ya Webb certainly the nicest, but always like to have a couple others since as you said it is likely to fill up fast. I think getting housing as a transfer in any form is a bonus, cause in the past, from what I remember, housing fills up and not all transfers get it, not sure if that is changing with Village having opened up??

So is The Village totally impossible to get, as in I shouldn’t bother listing it at all?

My senior daughter lived at Webb as a freshman and at Century as both a sophomore and junior. She preferred Century over Webb, but that likely had to do with the chosen/assigned room. She was in a 2BR / 1 BA at Webb (4 person) and a 1BR / 1 BA (2 person) at Century… so she had more space and only had to share the bathroom with one person at Century. Webb and Century both also have A/C throughout. Webb is directly on campus, which is slightly more convenient.

Next preferences would be La Sorbonne and Cardinal Gardens… which are similar to Century - except not A/C throughout… just in living room. I hear that CG is even more social than Century, but that could depend on the people within it during any term. Century has a pool though and a # of parties. So it can be quite social as well.

If you end up wanting to explore a private apt option near campus and save even more money vs USC Housing, feel free to PM me, and I will share the info on where my two daughters are living this year… a private apartment next to Troy. Each units are set-up as very nice 2 BR / 2 BA furnished apts with balconies and nice features - configured for 4. Each BR has its own Bath.

Good luck…
