I'm a sophomore transfer into USC who was accepted super-late and I probably have little to no chance of getting on-campus housing. As I've noticed, I'm not the only one in this predicament so I figure I'll try and set up a thread for those of us in this boat. I'm considering the following options:

Living in the R.W. Selby owned/USC managed apartments (super expensive, would probably need to find someone to split rent with)

Living in some of the other apartments right next to campus, like University Gateway and Icon Plaza. High prices are still an issue.

Finding an apartment in someplace like Silver Lake, Eagle Rock, or Pasadena and commuting a bit.

Deferring admission until spring and trying to see if I can apply for spring semester on-campus housing.

Since I live in Irvine, CA I could just try and make the roughly one hour long drive to downtown LA each morning, or take the train.

Are there any other housing options that I don't know about?

Much thanks.

PS: Icon Plaza has a 2BR fully furnished apartment for around $1,700. Is anyone here considering applying for an apartment and splitting the rent?

Yeah, I’m worried about the housing situation as well. I got accepted/applied for housing in late June, so I hope I get something :/. Especially because I’m an out of state student. You can try searching on craigslist for cheaper options than the ones you mentioned, though.

And lol, I think the 2 BR apartment at Icon Plaza is $1,700 PER person. Yeah, super expensive. You can go on their site and check out the different floor plans and pricing. The cheapest is $950 for the 5 BR, where you would be sharing a room with someone else, and the other 4 bedrooms are $1,334 for your own room.

Individual bedrooms at any of the newer complexes by icon/west27th/gateway are SUPER expensive and not worth it. They are only affordable if you split a bedroom with someone and even that is debatable on price. Though keep in mind it is possible to get into them if you are a spring admit since sometimes they have empty beds but you’d be placed with people you don’t know.

I’m a transfer student as well. I didn’t start looking for housing until a few weeks ago and found out that all USC student housing is sold out. I found a 400 square foot studio apartment on Adams and Portland (1 block from Frat Row on the North side of campus) for $900 a month. It’s called Nupac apartments. Seems pretty reasonable you should check it out.

Check out the Facebook pages for the previous classes, such as Class of 2014. The last time I viewed those there were many posts asking students to take over leases.
This might be a solution as some of them were discounting the rents.

I second checking out Nupac. Not fancy but it will do the job. Just do your best to get housing, as close to campus (and NOT south of campus) and then get settled in. You DON’T want to commute, especially as a transfer student. You’ll have enough issues finding your folks already by not having started there as a freshman, and that only becomes worse if you have to get in your car and drive home to an apartment elsewhere.

And don’t even consider commuting from Irvine. USC is expensive but it’s even more expensive (penny-wise and pound foolish) to try and half-arse it. If you want a commuter school, go to UCI or CSU Fullerton.
