Transfer info needed

Hey CC experts, I would greatly appreciate some advice with this matter of transferring.

I'm currently a student at UAlbany. I'm doing fine there academically, but the campus scene just doesn't mesh with my personality. I'm currently a freshman.

So I have determined that I want to transfer, but I have literally no idea where. Any ideas would be appreciated. For all I know, I have already passed the transfer deadline.

Some stats for you guys to work with:

High School (I believe colleges want this info if you transfer so early):
720/520/640 (1880), 3.3~ gpa.

I don't have my official grades yet for college, but from my calculations I have about a 3.3, or virtually the same overall average that I did in high school.

Also, I'm quite aware that most of you guys who post here are superior in both grades and SATS, please don't mock me, I'm just an average guy looking for a little help.

Thanks,

EJ Fields

This post is so vague haha. What major are you, do you want an urban setting, do you want to stay in the northeast, is money a factor?

I apologize for the vagueness. I currently don’t have a major, but this is what I took my first semester.

Statistics
Some sort of English class
Intro to Philosophy
Microeconomics
Bio

Kind of a weird combo, I know :P

I can go about 35k a year (currently paying a little more then half that.) I know that isn’t much by many standards, but it is simply what it is.

I would go anywhere in the country (although that is probably unfeasible with my budget.)

I don’t care so much about setting. I have lived in both NYC and a small town in Vermont during my lifetime, so I am comfortable with either.

Again, sorry about the vagueness.

well what exactly is it that you don’t like? is it all the concrete lol

you have more options than you think, so if you can give us more info like potential majors or career goals i think we can help you out :)

ps the last part of your post broke my heart a little. i want to give you a hug.

LOL. nah i didn’t mean it like that man. you don’t have to apologize for being vague haha. well you’re going to need a career goal or potential major (like ironicallyunsure said) for us to help u :D

I want to get out of the party school atmosphere. I believe it is negatively impacting my life, both academically and in terms of merit as a person. Can’t say I’m against partying, but I don’t want to be at a place where it is a focus, like it is at Albany.

Obviously, I need to improve my discipline as well. :P

Despite my course list, I am probably going to end up studying something in the liberal arts. There is just a huge gap between my ability in Math based things and non-math based things (Just look at my SAT score gap.) I tried to ignore this gap when picking courses, and I don’t think it was a good idea.

I’m thinking about Polisci. I borrowed the Polisci book of a guy on my floor and read 1/2 of it in a single night…

As for career aspirations, I really have no idea (I know I’m giving out alot of this aha)

Thanks for the help so far!

Well if you’re interested in political science, you should definitely look at this school called Yale. You probably never heard of it but I heard their polisci program is pretty decent at best.

In all seriousness though, you might want to wait until you transfer because it will be easier for you to get into places as a junior standing transfer. If you do raise your grades to around a 3.6 or higher you might have a great shot at NYU.

Do you want to stay in the SUNY System to keep costs down?

My son transferred to SUNY New Paltz and is having a good experience there. He is enjoying his classes as there are a lot of interesting ones to choose from. The small class size is great and the staff is very responsive. He got to choose his advisor, so he picked the head of his dept. The student body is friendly and down to earth…diverse, with all different types of students. The people he hangs out with are serious about their school work and interested in what they do. If you have any questions, I can try and answer them. It might be a school for you to consider. He didn’t even consider Albany…knew a bunch of kids that were going there and knew it wasn’t for him.

I have to say I’m somewhat wary of SUNY after Albany, but I will look into New Paltz. I have an acquaintance who goes there, so maybe I can get some info that way.

@ fightingillini: That seems like somewhat of a stretch…

A 3.3 as a transfer student looks much better than a 3.3 as a high school student, outside of the tippy top schools, it won’t hurt you. US News does a list called “A+ Schools for B Students” that might give you some help. You’re going to need to know what you want to do major in and have at least an idea of a career path when you’re writing transfer essays, so get on that. Good luck!
