Transfer into a college after one year of community college to fix up grades?

My grades in high school for the first two are bad, but I shaped up during my junior year and sense then I have been getting basically all As, including in a few AP classes. I am behind one math course though and community college seems like a route I will have to take. I am smart, but my SAT score won't be great untill I complete Geometry. Once I do that, I will have a at least above average SAT score.

If I complete one year of community college with straight As, and try to transfer into a good college/university after that year, do you think I will have a good chance? Is that ever done? Community ollege sounds depressing to me and I want to get into a decent college as fast as I can. Will a college see that I shaped up for my last two years of highschool and did great in a community college and decide to accept me?

It will really depend on the college. Most schools will want to see your HS grades as well as college. They may decide that you’ve been energized in school and accept you. If necessary you can always do 2 years in CC saving more money and showing a college grade trend.

There are a couple of options you have, so you really need to talk to a counselor at your school since they know the particulars better than anyone can on a discussion board. The counselor may also know of additional options. The first one is do what you said, spend one year at a CC and then apply to a 4-year U. However many colleges prefer to accept junior transfers who have completed their lower division requirements at a CC. This may limit your options, depending on where you live and want to apply. A second option is not to graduate HS this year, if that is possible. It sounds like there are classes left that you could take in HS, like geometry. Now that you’re working harder in school an additional year of good grades may open more doors for you. A third option is to work really hard with a SAT review book before the SAT; I’m not sure the latest date you can take it and still have it considered by colleges this year, but with 1-2 hours work a nite in the math section of a good prep book you can raise your score even without the geometry class. A 4th option would be to take a gap year; take the geometry class in summer school at a CC or your HS (perhaps not graduating HS until the end of the summer to make sure everyone considers you a frosh applicant) and then apply for college to begin after your gap year.

My overall advice would be to go to a 4-year the whole way thru if you can and its a good enough school. While many people do just fine transferring from a CC, the experience is somewhat different than for the 4-year students. Its easier to meet friends frosh year, you get to spend 4 years taking part in clubs, getting to know the profs, etc. instead of 2 (or 3). So that’s why I’m suggesting looking into ways to spend the extra year you think you need as prep as a HS student and not at a CC.
